Kässbohrer Setra S11 (1959)

Dieser Reisebus mit Panoramascheiben stammt von der Firma Kässbohrer, die 1951 als erster Omnibusbauer und Karosseur eine selbst tragende (=Setra) Karosserie entwickelte.

This touring coach with panoramic windows was manufactured by Kässbohrer, the first bus and touring coach manufacturer to develop a self-supporting body design. Note: I have adapted my notes from a translation of the original German. It explains that Setra is a contraction of the words 'selbst tragend', literally self supporting. I take this to mean, in modern terminology, 'integral'.

I probably should have taken the time to take a rear three-quarters view of this coach as I think those of you know this model will agree that it is very beautiful.

Ein Oberleitungsbus der Stadtwerke Solingen. Solingen ist eine der wenigen deutschen Städte, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg - ab 1952 - systematisch einen Obus-Betrieb aufgebaut und bis heute beibehalten haben.

A trolleybus of Solingen municipal works. After the war, Solingen was one of the first German cities to put in a trolleybus system - in 1952 - and it still runs today.

Many buses which have been moved to Europe have been converted but this Bristol Lodekka, S 557 PJ, a regular sight around Vienna, has retained RHD and its original entrance. Operated for Babylon Nightclub and displaying 'Sonderfahrt' ('Special Journey'), it is seen here on Parkring. There are other pictures online of this vehicle in an earlier livery but I have not been able to find its history. Any information would be welcome.

On a Grand Golden Circle Tour, one of the most popular in Iceland, I noticed during our first stop at Hveragerði that our BusTravel Iceland Mercedes-Benz Tourismo had a Polish registration. The vehicles are brought to Iceland on a six month lease, kept if satisfactory and returned if not wanted in the fleet. Incidentally, Poles make up the largest number of foreign residents in Iceland with more than 10x the next nearest who are Lithuanians.

As what I hope is a bit of a treat for my bus and coach enthusiast contacts, I photographed this Icelandic registered (TD 302) Auwärter Clubstar bodied Mercedes-Benz of Soleil de Minuit/Midnight Sun Travel in the car park of the Radisson Blu Saga hotel, Reykjavík. The body is, as far as I know, not seen in the UK.

In this view, the vehicle has just stopped to set down passengers at a busy time of the day before returning to the city centre. The route is rather circuitous but runs conveniently to the Central Railway Station.
