Dear folks,
Thought I'd send you a picture p.c. We've been having prairie fires raging all around us lately, did not come near our place, but "Jim" got his granary burnt and the boys had hard work to save the stable. John had quite a time fighting fire at his place a while ago, if he had not been there his buildings would have gone up in smoke. "Norman" has been sick, had to take him to the Dr. in Yorkton, but is getting better again. John lost another horse lately; busy seeding very dry but lovely weather. Yours, J. Wilson"

An early Warwick Bros. & Rutter undivided back card, no. 172, depicting the Brandon General Hospital. The addressee was Miss Stella Lawrence, 15 Laval Ave., Montreal (Miss Lawrence's postcard collection pops up quite a lot ... she must have had a lot of them). The writer of this card appears to realize that Stella is interested in receiving more: "Will try to send you some more cards before then." The card is postmarked at Brandon on October 1, 1905.

A J. H. Clarke card, unused with the ink stamp of D. F. de Tremaudan, Manor, N.W.T., Canada on the reverse. The cancel is "Manor, Assa.", a late use as it is October 1905, a month after the creation of the Province of Saskatchewan.

Winnipeg Tribune, July 24, 1905, p. 12 -- a big find here as we see the Government Agent cards being described. This gives us a rough date for their creation (which is about right given the postmarks on the series, which tend to be late 1905 and into 1906). Posted October 9, 1905 at Chatham, Ontario to Mr. W. J. Lane of Romney, Ontario (with a receiver postmark October 10 from Wheatley, Ontario). The card is interesting because it shows what appear to be three black men as "Chatham's Favorites". Chatham was one of the end points of the Underground Railroad and had (and still has) a sizeable black population by Canadian standards. The image in the centre looks as though it could be of an escaped slave, possibly Josiah Henson (the inspiration for the slave character in "Uncle Tom's Cabin). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josiah_Henson
