Just another Southern EMU, but a rare sight in this part of the world. A pair of 2HAPs -5633 (out of sight)+6159 pause at Redbridge with the 1812 all stations Bournemouth - Waterloo. The stoppers were normally the preserve of 4VEPs, with the occcasional CIG and BIG turning up. The appearance of these HAPs was exceptional.

High power

With 3200hp on tap, the 4REPs (Restaurant Electro Pneumatic brake) were the most powerful 3rd rail EMUs in the world. Just 100hp less than a Class 55 Deltic...
Their daily task was propellage/haulage of one or two unpowered 4TC units on Waterloo - Bournemouth/Weymouth trains, between Waterloo and Bournemouth, which they did superbly well, year in year out.
None survive in preservation, but 2 driving motors from unit 2003 (3003) are in use as hauled ultrasonic test vehicles; 999602 999605.
Here we see 3006 at Southampton with a semi-fast service from Weymouth - Waterloo.

Portsmouth electric

The Maunsell designed 4COR (CORridor) and 4RES (REStaurant) units were built for the 1937 Portsmouth electrification. In 1961 3 of the 4RES units were converted to 4GRI (GRIddle). This is 3087 seen parked out of use at Eastleigh.
In the background is 9F 2-10-0 92203 'Black Prince', which spent many years at Eastleigh.

Motor Luggage Van 68010. Ten of these battery electric units were built 1951 - 1961 for use on the boat trains from London Victoria to Dover and Folkestone. One or two of them were usually coupled to the front of 12 car EMUs.
Later reclassified as Class 419, they were all withdrawn in 1991/92 when the boat trains ceased running with the closure of Dover Western Docks.
This example is one of 3 preserved at the Eden Valley Railway at Warcop.

4-CEP unit 7132 departing Eastleigh with a Waterloo - Bournemouth all stations local service. More at home on the SE division, the 4-CEPs didn't normally venture to these parts.

A pair of 2-HAL EMUs, 2627+2610 stabled at Fratton. Parked alongside is 4-COR unit 3144. These two units date back to 1938 and were built for the London to Maidstone and Gillingham services.
The designation HAL comes from the Southern Railways seeming obsession with toilets. HAL meaning HAlf Lavatory unit, ie one lavatory per two car set. Allocated as TOPS class 402.

With their long association with Portsmouth, and just the one drivers windscreen, hence the name. 4-COR (CORridor) EMU 3145 departs Fratton. This unit was one of a batch built at Eastleigh in 1938 for express services between London and Portsmouth. One of the most comfortable trains I've ever rode on. The seats were like armchairs. These would have become Class 404, had they lasted.

A pair of 4-SUB EMUs roll through Clapham Jn bound for either Waterloo or Victoria. The rear unit is 1944 built 4106. These later became Class 405.

4-CIG 7382 heads up a Waterloo - Bournemouth semi fast at Southampton. The Waterloo - Bournmouth trains were normally the preserve of 4-REPs 4-TCs and 4-VEPs. Whilst appearances of these 4-CIGs were not unheard of, it was certainly unusual.

The driver of Hymek 7093, on a Portsmouth - Bristol train, sits on the steps of the loco at Southampton, watching the world go by, whilst he is overtaken by a Waterloo - Weymouth service with 4-TC 414 in the lead, propelled by one of the excellent 4-REPs.
