Built to Diagram 28 by the North Eastern Railway at York. It is a four section design :- a single compartment, an open saloon, a toilet and the luggage area. Withdrawn by the LNER in 1938, the coach body was grounded to form holiday accommodation. It was moved to the Beamish Museum in 1990 being featured in the colliery area and later as storage.

In 2013 Beamish declared it surplus to their requirements, and it was acquired by the AVR. It was sited on Platform One and after some cosmetic work it now provides a waiting room and stationmaster’s office. A suitable underframe has now been acquired and the coach will hopefully be restored to partner the NER directors coach in the future.

The happy ending is that, assuming the funding becomes available, it will be restored (see below). Although it doesn't look like it there are some substantial pieces of Teak in there, as well as some metalwork that will live again.
UPDATE (2017) And the vast majority of the fundraising has been obtained ... so work has actually started on this project, no doubt extra donations to the NSRRSRT would be welcome ...
