Bell kiln

Bell limekiln was built in the 1860s and was used until 1918. It retains the lime shed in front of the kiln to keep the product dry. In recent years it has seen significant restoration and the top now houses an observatory. It is grade II listed.

Hardendale kilns

Four Maerz PFR (parallel flow regenerative shaft kiln) limekilns at the Tata Steel operated Hardendale Quarry at Shap. A Maerz kiln can process up to 800 tons of burnt lime per day.

These kilns are currently mothballed whilst the Port Talbot steelworks is remodelled with electric arc melting technology.

Draw holes inside one of the large derelict limekilns at Porth-y-Waen. The banks of kilns here burned limestone from the Llynclys quarry on the hillside above.

Three limekilns at the Lhoist operated Rheinkalk Werk Hönnetal, Oberrödinghausen. One rotary kiln and a pair of Maerz type kilns. Around 200 people currently work in the quarry, kilns, processing plant, and in administration. Approximately 800,000 tons of quicklime and around 900,000 tons of unburnt limestone products are produced annually.

This two pot limekiln at Boujang in Ayrshire was operating in the 1850s but abandoned by 1890. The shell remains in steadily deteriorating condition.

Whitwell Quarry

The high purity dolomitic limestone extracted at the Tarmac operated Whitwell quarry is burned in the rotary kilns of the adjoining lime processing plant (operated by Lhoist) for use in refractory products and steel manufacture. There are only two quarries in the UK that produce limestone which is suitable for these specialist uses and both quarries are recognised sources of national importance of this mineral. Other grades of limestone present at the quarry that is not suitable for use in the kilns is used principally to produce agricultural lime and aggregates.

Anston kiln

Remains of one of several large circular intermittent limekilns at Anston Quarry to the west of Worksop. The 1890 OS map shows six of these kilns here and five in 1916. This quarry was a large operation with a siding connection to the main line railway.

Grove Limekiln

The kiln at Grove was built c.1900 within an enclosed yard which was principally used for dressing stone. It was constructed and operated by prisoners from the Portland Convict Establishment. It is likely that lime production at the kiln ceased in 1921 when prison became a Borstal Institution and the quarry and associated masonry works closed.

Ewe Close

The Ewe Close limekiln sits well away from footpaths in the limestone uplands near Crosby Ravensworth. The quarry that provided the stone to feed the kiln can be seen at right centre.

Dorset kiln

This limekiln is one of several that were worked in the Dorset parish of Loders. Long abandoned, it was difficult to photograph due to a large tree having fallen across the front of the kiln. The pot has been filled-in.

Wycoller kiln

Intermittent earthen limekiln remains below Copy House at Wycoller. Limestone would have been collected from the nearby river or washed out of the boulder clay in the nearby hills by 'hushing' - releasing stored water from ponds and watercourses made above the valley slopes. There is no native limestone nearby but the clay can contain as much as 25% limestone brought by glacial ice from Craven district of Yorkshire.

A last look for me at the shaft limekilns on the Tata Chemicals Lostock Works at the edge of Northwich. With the ending of soda ash production these kilns will be shut down and demolished.

This disused intermittent limekiln is typical of those found across north-east Wales. It has two draughting arches and is in poor condition. A most enjoyable day can be had walking in beautiful countryside and discovering these relics.

Maerz limekilns at the Tarmac Hindlow Quarry. The stone for burning is brought in by rail from Tunstead as quarrying has been suspended here. Tarmac is proposing to restart quarrying at the site and has been undergoing consultation on the plans.
