The Turicum, a bulk carrier registered in Basel, anchored in the Columbia just east of Longview, WA port. Per the following, it's home port is Basel, which I don't understand. Basel is on the Rhine and I don't believe ocean going vessels go that far inland on the Rhine. See: maritime-connector.com/ship/turicum-9583110

Port of Longview, WA from the Rainier, OR waterfront. If you look at the satellite photos, you'll see extensive lumber processing operations along the Longview waterfront, though these ships seem to all be bulk carriers.

Like the adjacent historic county courthouse building, the St. Helens City Hall looked surprisingly dark due to the basalt facade. Per the stone at the top of the building, this was initially a bank.

Former Columbia County Courthouse, now a museum. What interested me here was the stone used in building the courthouse -- I don't recall ever seeing a courthouse this dark. I was curious about Sauvie Island, a very large island close to the metropolitan Portland area that seemed to be untouched by development. There wasn't much for interesting photographs, except these interesting 'flowerboxes'.

One thing I was seeing along the Williamette and Columbia rivers in the Portland area were what looked like fairly conventional houses that you might see on a suburban lot, but sitting on barges. The ones that I saw were in places where it was difficult to photograph them, so the best I could do was this photo across a parking lot. Linnton is a neighborhood in the city of Portland on the Williamette river that seemed to have a number of older port facilities, including this abandoned warehouse. In the distance, some of the very many oil tank cars I saw on the rail lines along the OR/WA border towns.

Umatilla Bridge, carrying I-82 and US-395 over the Columbia River. From this angle, the two spans of the bridges were optically confusing, making it difficult to tell what bridge was carrying the traffic.

There was no opportune spot to photograph something else that was occurring very close to this site. Just on the east side of the spans was a major construction site that looked like it was the construction of a server farm (data center) due to the type of structures and the security around the construction. With a little searching, I found that my suspicion was correct. Amazon, which operates three server farms in the general area, was expanding its data center at the port of Umatilla. Though a goal on the trip along the Columbia was to begin to try to get some understanding of commercial use of the waterway, I went for very long stretches of seeing no evidence of such use. This was one of the very rare instances of seeing a vessel in movement on the river.

I had struck up a conversation with a fisherman at the dam, he said that these two gates in the spillway (in the center of the picture) were specifically opened to facilitate fish passage.

"Avian Predation Deterrent Array". The fisherman that I was talking with told me that there is an array of wires to reduce taking of smolt by birds. The next picture shows the wires, but you can barely see them.

If you look in the upper right corner and then look towards the left, you can barely see a grid of very thin wires that are vertical in the picture. These are designed to keep birds away from the seabound smolt departing the outflow on the lower right.

Smolt chute! (I think that's what the fisherman called it.) The blue structure visible in the back is a smolt monitoring station used for counts and tagging.

Barely visible in the middle of the picture, behind the smolt chute, is the fish ladder (brownish concrete) on the south side of the dam.
