I don't usually see white Hibiscus, so was pleased to see this beautiful one in the new Enmax Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo recently.

I just needed something completely different for a change, and found this Frilled Lizard taken at the Calgary Zoo on 12th March. Feels strange to look at something that doesn't live in the forest here.

The female Snow Leopard at the Calgary Zoo wasn't getting to chance to have babies, as the previous male apparently didn't know what he was supposed to do, LOL. When I called in at the Zoo yesterday afternoon, it was very obvious that the new male knew exaclty what to do - and often! He is a lot bigger than the female. She looks a little bedraggled here because she liked rolling in the snow : ) I'm not sure exacly when the two were allowed into the same enclosure - I believe it was within the past week and could possibly have been just yesterday. He had had to spend time in quarantine and then the two of them got used to each other a little through the chain link fence before being allowed in together. Gorgeous animals : )

Unfortunately, seen at the Zoo a few days ago, not out in the wild. Ones that I do see in the wild are always far, far away. I managed to keep fences and sheds out of the background, so that it would look as natural as possible.

This Trumpeter Swan at the Calgary Zoo was resting quietly while its mate slowly floated nearby. I always think they look so beautiful when they tuck their head into those soft feathers. I see Trumpeter Swans in the wild, too, but always from a distance.

Talk about intricate pattern and detail, and protection : ) This Inland bearded Dragon resides at the Calgary Zoo (behind glass, unfortunately).

"The beard has an expandable dewlap with spiky scales. The beard is used for both mating and aggression displays. Both sexes have a beard, but males display more frequently, especially in courtship rituals."

I called in to see the two Koala Bears that have just arrived at the Calgary Zoo this afternoon. Both animals were sitting in "trees" right at the back of the enclosures and were fast asleep with their backs towards the visitors - of course, ha, ha. This one woke up for a few seconds and turned its head to the side a little, allowing me to get a poor quality, indoor photo, but one that is nice to have. The two male Koalas - Mundooie and Budaru - will stay at the Zoo's Australia exhibit until just after the Labour Day weekend. The pair are on loan from the San Diego Zoo, which has more than 20 Koalas. Koalas sleep for 18-20 hours a day, basically waking only to feed : ) As Koalas are solitary animals, each has his own separate enclosure. Under the Koala loan program, our Zoo pays a monthly fee to the San Diego Zoo, which it sends on to a conservation organization in Australia. Sounds good to me.

This Tropical plant is always so spectacular. Couldn't resist taking yet another few shots of it last April. SInce then, the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo has been demolished and a lovely new building is underway, due to be completed this fall.

There is a small fountain/waterfall at the Calgary Zoo which freezes over in the winter. A little bit of milder weather, and the ice begins to melt in places and forms some creative patterns. Weather forecast for today is snow, and it looks like it will be hitting us in a short while.

This is one of three Bald Eagles at the Calgary Zoo. On my last visit a few days ago, all three birds were more active than when I usually see them. Such beautiful feathers!

This is a Wild Turkey, but I saw it (and several others) strolling around at the Calgary Zoo a few days ago. I had never seen one on top of a building or on top of a fence before, either. Though their faces may not be particularly photogenic or beautiful (to some people), the colours and patterns in their feathers are spectacular. When I photographed Wild Turkeys in the wild, I was not able to get this close with my camera.

I was on my own most of the time that I was in the Owl aviary at the Calgary Zoo the other day. This Snowy Owl has only one eye and so would not have survived if she (?) had been left in the wild. After she ate a dead chick, she moved over towards me and sat there maybe 5' away. Always such a thrill to be that close to an owl : ) The light was fading at the end of the afternoon, though the sunlight just caught her back.

One of many beautiful species of Orchid that were growing in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo in the summer. In a year's time, a new Conservatory will be completed and I can't wait to see what amazing Orchids and other tropical plants will be on display!

This is one of the three majestic Bald Eagles that live at the Calgary Zoo. They are in a separate enclosure from the Hawks and Owls and this enclosure is not open to people. Knowing how powerful that beak is, this is understandable! Usually, these Eagles are right away from the chain link fence and partly hidden by tree branches, but I was a little luckier this day. Occasionally, one will come and bathe in a tiny creek right next to the fence - I've had this happen two or three times and it's quite a feeling to be just a few inches away from one of these magnificent birds. I often see them in the wild, but can only get very distant photos. The Hawks and Owls at the Zoo tend to be injured birds, so I'm assuming that these Bald Eagles have also suffered injuries that would prevent them from surviving in the wild.

This is the male adult Snowy Owl at the Calgary Zoo, photographed in bad light : ). I was a bit concerned, as I could see no sign at all of his mate in the enclosure. He was standing in the place where I usually see the female. I do hope that all is well with this pair of beautiful owls.
