Better scan this time. Bedtime... A shunting and lifting loco in May 1970. The place is the former Eveleigh Loco depot and workshops in inner suburban Sydney. This place has been made into an industrial park.

Shunting in Darling Harbour in 1970 was largely done by steam locos. This class was originally introduced as tank locos as in this image for suburban train working. Later around half the class were converted to tender configuration. After electrification in Sydney the ones which remained as shown here were used in outer suburban work and upgraded the Newcastle and Wollongong suburban service, and various shunting and short distance country work. Sometime in 1970.

This area has been redeveloped into an entertainment precinct. A light rail system has utilised some of the former goods line route.

Shunting in Darling Harbour in 1970 was largely done by steam locos. This class was originally introduced as tank locos for suburban train working. See adjacent photo for original appearance. After Sydney electrification in the 1920s around half were converted to tender types as shown here. In this form they were used extensively for branch line working. Sometime in 1970.

Shunting in Darling Harbour in 1970 was largely done by steam locos. The nearer loco is a type first introduced in 1877 and a few saw continuous service until the end of steam in late 1972. This is a crop. Mouse over the note to see entire image. Sometime in 1970.

Locos 5910 and 5407 undergoing maintenance at Eveleigh Workshops on 12/09/70. (The original slide was dark as I had to guess the exposure and had no tripod with me. The camera shop scan came out exactly as the original).

The inaugural Indian Pacific train waiting to depart from Sydney Terminal on 23/02/1970. The first passenger train to cross Australia on the then recently completed standard gauge line. Does anyone know the loco numbers? (didn't record them, they were only electric...)
