I used to write the names of the new members on the bulls. In return I received a free glas of Dutch gin, but that didn't make me drunk, because new members were few and far between. In the end they felt sorry for me and gave me a half bottle of gin. Now the fraternity has folded and I'm going to hand the Great Seal and the blank bulls over to the Academic Historical Museum of Leiden University.

Dutch Lions above the city gate of Leiden, the Netherlands. The latin means: "this is for freedom's sake". The latin text was used on emergency paper money during the Spanish siege of Leiden in 1574. The other text was pugno pro patria (I fight for the fatherland). Some radical protestant objected to the haec libertatis ergo, saying that it should be haec religionis ergo (for religion's sake), but freedom was considered greater than the narrow interests of (strict) protestant religion. One clergyman objected so strongly from the pulpit against the haec libertatis ergo, that a city official drew his pistol and asked mayor Van der Werff (who was sitting beside him) if he should shoot the clergyman from the pulpit. The mayor wisedly advised against it and stopped him from doing so.

Sensible attitude of the Leiden City Council and a lesson for those of any religion who place religion above freedom.

"Men bleef aen de Staetsche sijde bestendig bij 't voornemen om 't uiterste voor de vrijheit uit te staen, insonderheit te Leyden, daer men geduirende het beleg, bij gebrek van silver, papiere penningen sloeg, tot de waerde van achtentwintig en veertien stuivers: de kleenste voerden aen d'eene sijde een Leeu met een swaerdt en schilt, en dit opschrift: PUGNO PRO PATRIA, ik strijde voor 't vaderlandt; de grootste een Leeu, houdende een hoedt op een speer, met dit omschrift: HAEC LIBERTATIS ERGO, Dit's voor de vrijheit; willende seggen, dat se leden en streden om de vrijheit; doch de Predikanten der Stadt ontsaegen sich niet de Wethouders op den predikstoel daer over te bestraffen, en Libertijnen of Vrijgeesten te noemen, meenende, dat men behoorde te schrijven: HAEC RELIGIONIS ERGO, Dit 's om de Religie, als of de vrijheit van de Religie niet mede onder het woordt vrijheit waer begrepen; en als of ook niet anderen, uit haet van de Inquisitie en Spaensche regeeringe, sich trouwelijk voor het vaderlandt hadden gequeten, niet sijnde nochtans van de Gereformeerde Religie. Een der Predikanten, voer te deser tijdt op den predikstoel over 't opschrift van 't papiere gelt soo hevig uit, dat seker Amptenaer der Stadt, een man van strengen inborst, sittende, nevens den Burgemeester van der Werf, in 't Heeren gestoelte, een geladen pistool uit den sak trok, seggende tot sijn bijsitter: Wil ik hem er aflichten? meenende van den predikstoel; 't geen de Burgemeester wijsselijk afriede en stuitte."
