This road runs from Queenstown in Tasmania to the nearby mine at Mt Lyell, before continuing to Hobart and the east coast. I took the shot primarily because it shows at close hand how smelter fumes over the past century have cleared the vegetation, which would once have been lush, while the devastation has been made complete by heavy rainfall removing the soil from the bare earth.

Not what it was in about 1900, when it had 20 hotels, Zeehan is a small former mining town in the west of Tasmania. The imposing building on the left, once the Gaiety Theatre, houses part of a community museum. Happy Fence Friday!

Taken along the track to the Hogarth Falls in western Tasmania. Despite appearances, the water in the creek is fresh and clean, that brown colouring comes from tannins leaching from the sap of the trees in the forest.

Just outside the little town of Strahan in western Tasmania is a very pleasant park, where a walk through cool temperate rainforest leads to these falls . I think best viewed on black.

A walking path in a forest reserve near on the west coast of Tasmania. Incredibly, the new Australian government has requested that 74,000 hectares of Tasmanian forest with World Heritage listing whc.unesco.org/en/list/181 be removed from the listing and made available for forestry.

A new frond unfolding on a Soft Tree Fern Dicksonia antarctica. This was taken in Tasmania, but these also are the most common tree ferns in the SE of mainland Australia. They grow to about 5 metres.

The botanical name for these is Bossiaea cineria. We found these in the central highlands of Tasmania, but they also grow in parts of SE mainland Australia. The flowers are about 15mm long. Wider shot in note.

I really don't know why, but it seems this is called "Tick Bush". Ticks are the ultimate turn-off, so I think I prefer the botanical name of Kunzea ambigua. We found this (without any ticks) in eastern Tasmania, but it also grows in areas of the SE coast of mainland Australia. The flowers are 2-3 cm across.

These little flowers go by either of two common names. Their botanical name is Patersonia fragilis and they come from SE mainland Australia and Tasmania: we found these in Tasmania.

These colourful flowers were alongside the road at several points in western Tasmania. A Tasmanian garden nursery has since confirmed my suspicions that they are garden escapees.

Lookout over the former pit of the Mt Lyell mine in Tasmania. Fumes from mining and processing operations have devastated the landscape, stripping it of most vegetation and the high rainfall removing the topsoil. Happy Fence Friday!

The Swamp Honey-myrtle Melaleuca squamea was growing in moist areas of Tasmania's west coast and in full flower during our stay. It also is found in parts of mainland Australia.

[Edited] These flowers were growing on small shrubs in parts of the Tasmanian west coast. I had identified them as a Tasmanian native plant, but several ipernity members picked them as Canary Broom Genista monspessulana. After some research, I must agree with them. That means that these pleasant looking flowers belong to particularly invasive plant which has been declared a "Weed of National Importance": about as nasty as can be found..... At least I didn't try to collect any cuttings or seeds!

The Tasmanian waratah Telopea truncata is one of the five members of the Telopea genus, each endemic to different regions of Australia, and a member of the Proteaceae family. The plant was first described botanically by the French botanist Jacques Labillardière in 1805. These waratahs grow as small trees: see the inset note at top right. This one was flowering alongside the road in western Tasmania as we drove past (and very promptly stopped for photos).
