I encountered a pair of bison in Grasslands National Park in June 2012. In this image I decided to show these large mammals in context with the huge landscape where they graze.

Driving along a back road in Grasslands National Park I encountered a single bison grazing close by. I was privileged to spend about 15 minutes taking photos of this magnificent animal. It moved slowly and never showed any signs that it was disturbed by my presence. That is a good thing, because they can move quickly if they have a mind to.

I took this from a high point in the West Block of Grasslands National Park in the late afternoon or early evening. I liked the way the spine of the hill, the watercourse in the valley and the clouds aligned, sort of.

An outcropping of stones left behind by a retreating glacier, on a mound also formed by glacial activity. I took this image during an evening g hike in the West Block of Grasslands National Park.

A large table-like glacial erratic with a portion of the West Block of Grasslands National Park in the background. Taking this image required a hike from an entrance to the park, which is located in the flat area in the far background. It's a huge park!

This image was taken in a valley just west of Grasslands National Park, during an evening photo shoot. I had recently added a wide angle lens to my kit, and this scene called out for it.

During my first photography field trip in June 2006 I also saw bison on their native habitat for the first time. Bison had recently been introduced in Grasslands National Park, and this fellow was one of the original herd. This is from a tiff file that I created. at that time. Today's editing tools do a better job of showing the details of its head, including the brown eyes against brown hair.

A tent seen from one of the buttes in Grasslands National Park. The tent gives you an idea of the scale of some of the buttes and gullies carved by a retreating glacier thousands of years ago.

The unscientific description for these clouds is horsetail. This was taken on film, likely around 2006, in the Frenchman River Valley, near the West Block of Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan.
