The one smiler in this photo has a small, rather strange, worried looking smile and is certainly outnumbered by all the non-smilers. (Can you see him?)
A friend who grew up with horses remarked, "Did you ever notice how odd horses were in the olden days?"
Well, not being a horse person I had never noticed that, but since she mentioned it I find that it's often true. They look...strange.
This horse seems to have a strong mulish streak, although that's not possible is it?
I think the woman in the carriage is the sister of the person who took all the photos in this album - that I purchased at a huge town-wide sale in Warrensburg, New York.

I like this jaunty fisherman showing off his catch with his banded straw boater, patterned tie, and pipe. Just noticed when I scanned this (it's a pretty small photo) that someone has drawn in his hair - and it's blue!

Behind the sweet little child is either a garden shed or an outhouse (in the American sense, meaning an outside toilet).
This is a photo from an album of photographs I bought at a town-wide sale in NY state. I believe it came from Michigan.
PEOPLE IN OR BY DISTINCTIVE TREES
This is a photo taken c.1912, probably in Michigan. A sad reminder of the massive, ancient trees that were once common throughout the country.
Several years ago when we replaced the shingles on our 1870s house, we found the underneath framing had boards that were incredibly wide - certainly cut from local trees - meaning that our surrounding mountains also had giants like these. Although we have far more forest than we did at the turn of the century, most of it is now third growth forest.
