A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the monthly theme of CDVs and cabinet cards.

A nineteenth-century cabinet card photo of two young fellows posing with their bicycles in a studio located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. See also a cropped version for a better view of the guys and their bikes.

Names written on the back of the photo: "Adam J. Althouse & Calvin P. Muhey."

Stamped in ink on the verso: "W. S. Anspach, Photographer, Cor. 3rd & Lehman Sts., Lebanon."

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of crowds, throngs, or hordes (a big bunch of people).

Top: “LHS, 1929.” Bottom right: "Ulrich Studio, 1929." Right edge: “Congratulations.”

This is a composite photo that consists of about 200 individual portraits of students from the class of 1929 at Lebanon High School, Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The class size seems large for the time, but presumably these are all seniors. The high school building appears at top left and teachers are at top right.

For better views of the students, see cropped versions of the left-hand side and the right-hand side of the photo.

This is a divided-back real photo postcard with an Azo stamp box design (squares in all four corners) on the other side. This type of stamp box typically indicates that a photo may date to sometime between 1924 and 1949, which is consistent with the 1929 date of this photo. This postcard is unused, and there's no message, address, or postmark on the verso.

Forty-eight schoolchildren and a teacher pose for a photo outside a school. The photographer's name and location -- "Wolfe, Lebanon, Pa." -- is embossed on the border of the photo, but there's nothing else that identifies the school.

Grinning Schoolkid is third from left in the first row and Smirking Schoolkid is second from right, also in the first row.

This is a bright orange nineteenth-century business card for George Roch (1852-1913). A number of directories list him as a music teacher or musician, usually with an address in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, rather than Lebanon. John H. Long (1850-1925) was a carpenter and organ manufacturer in Lebanon.

A drinking photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

Seventeen of the twenty men in this image from a real photo postcard are holding glasses of beer. The keg in the middle of the crowd bears the name "Lebanon," which refers to the city that's the county seat of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

A handwritten name and address—"Samuel D. Watson, Rexmont, Pa."—and a year—"1912"—appear on the other side of the photo card, but there's no stamp, postmark, or message. Rexmont is now part of Cornwall, which is also located in Lebanon County.

John Matthes (1834-1894) was the proprietor of American House, a hotel in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. It's likely that this business card dates to around 1864, when Matthes ran a newspaper ad for American House. A later advertisement indicates that he was operating a wine and liquor store by 1873 (see below for the ads).

I chose musicians in order to pick a theme about people (or any other topic) for the first week of Wild Card Month—Pick Your Own Theme! in the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

The handwritten message on the front of this real photo postcard (see the left-hand side) is: "Vara Light, 928 Maple St., Lebanon, Pa. Answer soon."

There's no stamp or postmark on the other side, but Vara Light addressed the postcard to "Miss Sarah Zimmerman, Linglestown, Pa.," and also wrote a message: "This is a picture taken at Mt. Aetna last summer. The one standing is my uncle, a minister. Also the one with the violin [meaning that the violinist is also one of her uncles?]. The lady with the guitar is my aunt. Am working now in Lebanon. Tell Miles to answer my card."

This postcard back has an AZO stamp box (four corner triangles pointing up), which suggests a date as early as 1904 to 1918. Vara Katherine Light married William Hoehle Keller on September 1, 1910, and at that time her address was 330 N. 9th Street, Lebanon, Pa. It seems likely, then, that the card dates to sometime prior to their wedding.

I haven't been able to identify which of Vara's aunts and uncles might be the musicians in the photo, but they may have been siblings of her father, Harry Henry Light, who was a prominent businessman in Lebanon, Pa.

Printed on the back of this postcard: "24224 - Pub. by Harpel's Art Store, Lebanon, Pa. Officers. President - Geo. T. Spang. Vice-Pres. - Wm. S. Rise. Secretary - Wm. A. Spangler. Treasurer - Chas. H. Killinger. Chief Eng. - Levi Hartz. Equipment - 2nd. size Amoskeag Engine, Hose Wagon. Organized Feb. 22, 1780. Chartered as Steam Fire Engine Co., March 19, 1866."

According to an article that appeared in the Lebanon Daily News on April 22, 1970, p. 19, this was one of a series of fire company postcards published by Harpel's Art Store for the thirty-third annual convention of the Pennsylvania State Firemen's Association, which was held in Lebanon on September 10 to 14, 1912.

The Nickelodean, a trade magazine for the early film industry, included a state-by-state listing of news "Among the Picture Theaters" in its issue for March 4, 1911. Under the section for Pennsylvania (p. 260), it noted, "A moving picture theater has been opened in the Richland House Hall at Richland."

The Richland House was a hotel in Richland, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, but I haven't been able to uncover any other information about this ticket or the moving picture theater held in the hotel's hall. Searching for "Braden & Funny Little Tommy" didn't yield any results either.

The back of the ticket gives the dates of the shows as Saturday and Monday, February 22 and 24, without specifying a year. Thanks to Time and Date's Weekday Calculator, I was able to determine that February 22 and 24 fell on Saturdays and Mondays in the years of 1902, 1908, 1913, 1919, and 1930. Since the theater at the Richland House evidently opened in 1911, I'm guessing that this ticket dates to 1913.

May Day festivities at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania, in 1934. Writing on the back of another photo (see below) identifies Minna Wolfskiel as the May Queen and Gem Gemmill as the Maid of Honor in the "May Court" that year.

Luther G. Harpel or some other photographer from his well-known studio in Lebanon, Pa., captured the images of the event (evidently there were 16 or more photos, judging by the numbering on the photos).
