Saint Martin, now parish church of Périgné, was erected within the 12th century. The rich Romanesque style was obviously influenced by the studios working at the Abbey of Celles-sur-Belle, only 12 kms northwest. The building severely suffered during the medieval wars and conflicts, but got restored and rebuilt afterwards a couple of times in different styles. The Romanesque nave has some very interesting portals.
The outer archivolt of this portal has a strange "design" - and seems to depict tentacles of a giant octopus. Even the rows of suckers are visible..

Saint Martin, now parish church of Périgné, was erected within the 12th century. The rich Romanesque style was obviously influenced by the studios working at the Abbey of Celles-sur-Belle, only 12 kms northwest. Secondigné-sur-Belle, a village of a pop. about 500, hosts the pretty large church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, erected probably within the 12th century, but altered and enlarged later. Seen here is the portal.
There are quite a lot churches named "St. Peter in Chains" in Europe.

They all refer to St. Peter’s miraculous escape from prison - Acts 12:1-19. The chains are on display in "San Pietro in Vincoli" in Rome.

Secondigné-sur-Belle, a village of a pop. about 500, hosts the pretty large church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, erected probably within the 12th century, but altered and enlarged later. There are quite a lot churches named "St. Peter in Chains" in Europe.

Séligné is a small hamlet (pop. ~100). The Romanesque church "Notre-Dame", is situated next to the graveyard. The main portal was locked, but a little side door stood open. This octogonal baptismal font may well be as old as the church.

There was an inviting "Coquille Saint-Jacques", but I read as well the "Propriété Privée" and learned from another sign, that guided tours were possible "sur rendez-vous"... I had no appointment, as I was just passing by - and so did not enter the premises.

This was obviously the residency of the medieval archpriest, representing the bishop. I walked all around the fence as a small Romanesque church is part of the ensemble. Here is the chapel´s portal.

Saint-Romans, the parish church of the village, is a nice 12th century structure. It got obviously altered and enlarged later. The tower was added within the 15th century.

remarkable wash houses in Melle, so we took a very
worthwhile detour.

Here is the Lavoir de Loubeau.

A washhouse existed here since 1793. Today´s structure
dates to the early 19th century. In 1837 it got modernized
for hygiene and safety reasons.
