A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of ice cream.

To pose for a picture, some young men and women have gathered around a table in what may be a soda shop or ice cream parlor. One of the guys is wearing a paper soda jerk cap, and another one has a "Marco" baseball jersey. Three of the women have saddle shoes, and the one standing on the left-hand side is wearing a skirt with a nautical theme (the pattern in the fabric depicts boats and docks).

A number of Coca-Cola bottles are on the table, and the signs arranged around the room feature advertisements for Dolly Madison ice cream, ice cream soda, Coca-Cola, and ice cream cones. The back of the photo is stamped with "Property of Mrs. Napoletano," but there's no other identifying information.

An ice cream photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

Photographer and postcard publisher Clyde A. Laughlin originally published a series of real photo postcards showing scenes from the Patriotic and Industrial Parade in Newburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1909, not long after it took place. This photo shows a boy riding a cow to advertise "Hoch's Ice Cream Parlor" (mouse over the image for a closer look).

The details in this photo are sharp, but I purchased the card knowing that it does not date to 1909. Unlike other early Laughlin photos, this one is reproduced in black and white rather than sepia, and the Kodak postcard backing was obviously manufactured much more recently than 1909.

Fortunately, I have a copy of the book, Clyde A. Laughlin, "Postcard King of the Cumberland Valley": Biography of the Artist and Photographer and Checklist of His Postcards, written and published by Clyde's grandson, Walter Lewis Cressler, Jr., in 2000. The author explains on page 30 that his grandfather reprinted the photographic cards from the Newburg parade in 1961 when the town celebrated its centennial. So it's likely that this version of the Hoch's Cow photo is one of the cards from 1961.

According to "Russ Bros. New Ice Cream Plant," an article in the Ice Cream Trade Journal, March 1920, pp. 47-49, the Russ Bros. Ice Cream Company bought an old typewriter factory located at Nineteenth and Manada Streets in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and converted it into a modern manufacturing plant capable of producing up to one million gallons of ice cream in a year.

This Victorian-era trade card features a group of winged infant children who are gathered around a goat-drawn wagon that's transporting a Star Ice Cream Freezer manufactured by the American Machine Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Depictions of winged infants--called putti or cherubs--were popular in Victorian and Edwardian advertisements and illustrations. These winged children are secular counterparts to biblical angels and mythological cupids, and their appearance doesn't necessarily signify religious devotion or romantic love. In this case, I believe that they were simply used in a lighthearted way to extol the virtues of the company's ice cream freezers. And they might have also appealed to the children who collected and pasted trade cards into scrapbook albums in the late nineteenth century.

The back of this Good Humor Man paper mask from the 1960s gives assembly instructions (push out the perforated ear flaps, attach elastic band, put it around your head) and then advises, "Hi, now you're a Good Humor Man, too. Always remember why Good Humor Ice Cream is by far the best. Good Humors are made from sweet ice cream and delicious fresh fruits.... Handwritten message on the back of this real photo postcard: "This is the table where we had a many good meal those ten days. The lady at the end was a visitor. She brought 1 gal. of ice cream along."

The seven Raise 'ell campers and a visitor are seated around the table where they had "a many good meal" during their stay. Perhaps they're eating the ice cream that the woman at right brought with her. Next to her are two milk cans, which were probably used to store water. The stream that's visible In the background is Wills Creek, which is still a popular fly-fishing destination today.

Is that a Buster Brown outfit that the boy is wearing in this photo and the previous one?
