From Passage Peak on Hamilton Island.

Whitsunday Island is accessible by boat from the mainland tourist ports of Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. It contains many popular destinations for both day visitors and overnight sailors, including the magnificent pure-white sands of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, the secure anchorage of Cid Harbour, and the sheltered waterway of Gulnare Inlet. The island has six campgrounds.

Named by Captain James Cook in early June 1770, the island covers 27,508 ha (275.08 km2) in area. Around the northern bays of the island are seagrass beds which support a diverse range of marine life.

Holiday in the Whitsundays, Queensland!

Captain James Cook, then a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, passed through these islands in 1770, on his first voyage around the world in the Endeavour.

'Indeed the whole passage is one continued safe harbour,' he noted on the morning of Sunday, 3 June. It was Whitsun, the seventh Sunday after Easter and the feast of Pentecost, so Cook named it the Whitsunday Passage and one of what he called the Cumberland Islands -- Pentecost Island.

With over 90 islands stretching from Bowen in the north to the Repulse Islands in the south, the Whitsunday group is part of Australia’s largest offshore island chain, known as the Cumberland group. All the islands and their surrounding waters (collectively known as 'the Whitsundays') have international protection as part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. In addition, some islands have been declared national parks by the Queensland Government.

From a dilapidated mooring-minder with a bargain-basement purchase price, Sir Thomas Sopwith is now millions of dollars worth of gleaming fittings and deck hardware, teak decks and toe rails, embroidered pillows, imported parchment and leather-stitched lampshades, American oak interior and stainless steel edgings.

Designed by the UK’s Robert Clark, the 72ft long, 14ft 6in beam ketch was launched in England in the early 1970s and bequeathed to the Ocean Youth Club of Great Britain by the English aviation pioneer and yachtsman, Sir Thomas Sopwith...

English aviation pioneer Thomas Sopwith’s company produced more than 18,000 British World War I aircraft for the allied forces, including 5,747 of the famous Sopwith Camel single-seat fighters. He was just as passionate about his sailing, challenging for the America’s Cup... with his J-Class yachts Endeavour and Endeavour II in the 1930s... was inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1995.

We travelled with Cruise Whitsundays from Hamilton Island, via Daydream Island to Abell Point. The impressive marina has at least doubled in size since the last time we visited.

An outline history of the marina is in the first comment. The first settler and land owner of the area now known as Airlie Beach was Thomas Abell, from Herefordshire in England.

With direct access to the Whitsundays 74 Islands and Great Barrier Reef, Abell Point Marina is located in Airlie Beach, North Queensland, 30 minutes from Proserpine Airport or a ferry transfer from Hamilton Island Airport. We were staying on Hamilton Island and on Sunday did the walk to Passage Peak which overlooks the Whitsunday Passage, named by Captain James Cook in 1770.

Quite a challenging walk but very rewarding at Passage Peak.

We were staying on Hamilton Island and on Sunday did the walk to Passage Peak which overlooks the Whitsunday Passage, named by Captain James Cook in 1770.

Portuguese explorers may have been the first Europeans to visit this part of the Australian coast, but for the record it was Captain Cook, then a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, who passed through these islands on his first voyage around the world in the Endeavour. On the night of 1 June 1770 he anchored off what today is Mackay, and two days later sailed through a blue stretch of water dotted with islands.
