This photo was taken on a very cold but still morning on the first day of Advent. The bridge in the background is the main crossing point for this fjord.

I have a few favourite artists, and one of them is Anthony Gormley. His sculptures are strong and many of them are based on his body. This sculpture is part of his site specific sculpture project 'Broken Column' (2003), with consists of 23 identical rusty steel sculptures mounted outdoors and indoors in public, semi-public and private places in Stavanger.
The 1.95-metre-tall sculptures are based on a cast of the artist’s own body. They relate to each other through their elevation above or below sea level and through the direction in which they face. The sculpture inside Stavanger Art Museum stands in its own white gallery room, at 41,41 metres above sea level. The sculpture here is at sea level and it is the penultimate sculpture. The final and 23rd sculpture stands with 149 of its 195 cm underwater, on a rock beyond Natvigs Minde in Stavanger's port basin.

We have also seen Gormley's 'Another Place' on the Mersey Estuary. The installation comprises 100 cast-iron life-size sculptures made from 17 different moulds taken from the sculptor’s own body which are installed on Crosby Beach on the Mersey Estuary. The 'iron men' all face the open sea, and evoke the relationship between the natural elements, space and the human body.

We have also seen Gormley’s 6 figures in Edinburgh, the first one can be be found opposite the main pedestrian entrance of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on Belford Road. The next four standing figures can be found within the Water of Leith itself. The final figure is located at the end of an abandoned pier in Leith Docks, looking out to the point where the Water of Leith meets the Firth of Forth.

Another example of Gormley's work is 'The Angel of the North', a contemporary sculpture by the artist, which is located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Completed in 1998, it is seen by an estimated 33 million people every year due to its proximity to the A1 and A167 roads and the East Coast Main Line. The design of the Angel, like many of Gormley's works, is based on Gormley's own body. The Angel, like much of Gormley's other work, is based on a cast of his own body. We lived in Tanager for 5 years from 2007 to 2012. I used to love this view - walkable from our apartment. By the looks of the map it's a lot more built up now.

The best example of bronze age rock carvings in the Stavanger area is Fluberget at Revheim, a few kilometers west of Stavanger.
It is thought that the site was a religious meeting place, with the carvings dating from 1800 to 500 years BC.
This archeological site is a low south-facing cliff about 200 metres from Hafrsfjord, and was discovered in 1879.
The ship or boat symbols are common in Scandinavian rock carvings and many are found here.
The hand symbols represent Gods who should not be directly portrayed. The meaning of some of the carvings is still not known.

The concert Hall was officially opened by Crown Prince Haakon on 15 September 2012. The financing of the building was shared by the municipality of Stavanger, the county of Rogaland, the Norwegian government and private sponsors at a cost of 1.225 billion Norwegian kroner. It is spectacular inside.

She Lies (Norwegian: hun ligger) is a public sculpture by Monica Bonvicini made of stainless steel and glass panels measuring approximately 12 metres (39 ft) by 17 metres (56 ft) by 16 metres (52 ft) next to the Oslo Opera House, in Norway.

It is a permanent installation, floating on the water in the fjord on a concrete platform, 12 metres (39 ft) above the water surface. The sculpture turns on its axis in line with the tide and wind, offering changing experiences through reflections from the water and its transparent surfaces. The sculpture was made by Bonvicini as a three-dimensional interpretation of Caspar David Friedrich's painting The Sea of Ice (Das Eismeer) (1823–1824). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Lies

The Oslo Opera House (Norwegian: Operahuset) is the home of The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the national opera theatre in Norway. It was designed by Snøhetta, an international architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and brand design office based in Oslo, Norway. Construction started in 2003 and was completed in 2007, ahead of schedule and 300 million NOK (~US$52 million) under its budget of 4.4 billion NOK (~US$760 million). The gala opening on 12 April 2008 was attended by His Majesty King Harald.

The roof of the building angles to ground level, creating a large plaza that invites pedestrians to walk up and enjoy the panoramic views of Oslo. While much of the building is covered in white granite and La Facciata, a white Italian carrara marble, the stage tower is clad in white aluminium, in a design by Løvaas & Wagle that evokes old weaving patterns.

It is sited in Oslo’s old Bjørvika harbour area and was the first building in a comprehensive urban development project for the area. When I was there, development was ongoing, and many of the roads were either blocked or only passable through a pedestrianised section alongside the harbour.

The historic crucifix shaped church Strømsø Church was opened in 1667 is located in the Strømsø district of Drammen. The tower of the church was not built until 1694. The church's architect was Daniel Knoff.

The River Harp is a sound sculpture comprising two large silver balls, one on either side of Drammenselva. The sculpture creates river music through variations in water flow and oscillations of the Ypsilon suspension bridge near the sculpture, which acts as a gigantic harp. Sensors capture footsteps crossing its hundred-yard span, and hidden computers relay them – mingled with river-sounds and the wind in the wires – to resonate inside two steel balls.

In the sphere one can see Fabbrikgata, part of the Høgskolen i Sørøst-Norge (University College in Southeastern Norway) and the lights of the Ypsilon Bridge over Drammen's River.

The 'music' blends with local voices singing to appease the legendary Nøkken, a shape-shifting water spirit. To women, Nøkken appears as a beautiful young man with a violin, enchanting them with sweet river music, drawing them ever closer until they fall in and drown.
