A rather artistic view showing the higher peaks of Rum and the edge of Eigg. As can be seen, other intrepid explorers enjoy the view too standing on a small rocky outcrop into the sea.  &lt;br /&gt;

    <title>The Small isles from Mallaig</title>

Here we see left to right: The isle of Eigg, Rum and the Isle of Skye on the right. &lt;br /&gt;
In front of the fence sits a bench with table, as besides this view, just some 30 metres directly below us runs the famous single line of the West Highland Railway, quite often with steam locomotives and heritage carriages but we were two weeks or so too early to see steam.  I did see, or rather heard, the diesel trains rushing by a couple of times though. &lt;br /&gt;

A short time after taking this we were to drive into Llangollen for our Dinas Bran climb. A temptation here to try to get rid of the electric wires but that would be cheating.&lt;br /&gt;

Ben Lomond is the most southerly Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet). Rising to 974 meters (3,196 ft), it is located on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It is highly accessible from Glasgow and offers stunning loch views.&lt;br /&gt;

We see here on the left The Island of Rum, then with a bigger space than it appears here from the centre (Point of Sleat) , the Isle of Skye. There is a big gap between the two islands. If I went wider angle here we would also see the Island of Eigg to the left of Rum and further on the right, the rugged Torridon Mountains of Skye.&lt;br /&gt;

The walkers we see here might look quite colourful and out for a pleasant summer’s walk but they are dressed in their best warm waterproofs, as are we.    &lt;br /&gt;

We see in the misty distance the city of Manchester but here the ground is frozen underfoot and urban life seems a long way away. A good hour of hard walking to get back in these conditions.&lt;br /&gt;
Taken just a year and some days ago as the recent snows were just starting to melt away on the same day in this year of 2026.&lt;br /&gt;
PS to those  British viewers who see this, you may see my double-meaning reference to “Town &amp; Country”  as we have a car tyre type of the same name and we have prominent tyre tracks here, (more likely done by a tractor though :))&lt;br /&gt;

In fact the first real downfall of snow we have had this winter.  Not very much but in this -6C temperature and sun it looked quite wonderful.&lt;br /&gt;

From a clearer spot on there I get this easterly view of the early morning mist inversion over what I am sure is Esthwaite Water. The fence attracts me but the lighting brings out all the earthly colours of this wintery foreground. Only minutes later the sky was to become almost cloudless clear blue as we come to Tarn Hows itself (PiP)&lt;br /&gt;
