The Kalamata olive is a large, dark purple olive with a smooth, meaty texture. It is named after the city of Kalamata and is grown in the surrounding area. Kalamata olives are larger and have significantly firmer, plumper flesh than conventional olives.
Within the EU, the designation is protected by Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status; this means that the name may only be used for olives (and olive oil) from the region around Kalamata.

As far as we can tell, Taverna tis Alexandra serves authentic, delicious Greek food. And, just like in Cyprus, a ‘proper’ pork chop weighs here at least 600g.

The restaurant Fourogatos is located right by the sea, and claims to present dishes "deeply rooted in traditional Cretan cuisine with a creative twist that makes each plate unique". I cannot judge that, but it was very delicious.

"To Havesilik" has been my favourite restaurant ever since my first visit there. I spent two long evenings there again this year. The food is absolutely delicious and the house wine is good value for money. There’s live music too. Most of the guests are locals, who join in with the singing.

Giaourtlou - small greek style burgers with fat yogurt.
(Giaourtlou is the greek word for yogurt).
