Alice in Wonderland.

Llandudno is a real life evocation of Alice in Wonderland because it was here, in 1861, that the Liddel family, including little Alice, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s fantasy, came for their seaside holiday.

To the right of the plinth there is a bottle labelled 'Drink Me', and when Alice does, just that, to her astonishment, she shrinks small enough to enter the door. down a rabbit hole. But then she finds and eats a cake labelled "Eat me", which causes her to grow to a tremendous size.

I loved these adventures when I was a child, and still occasionally take up the book once more

Adrian has a woolly jumper on as we've just come down from the top of The Great Orme. It came off very soon after this.

We moved away quite quickly as the seagulls were being a nuisance. One of them even had the audacity to pinch a whole sausage from a woman's hot-dog. That caused a big flurry of wings, and lots of noise.

Llandudno Station is Closed.

The station concourse was closed due to staffing problems, but it was possible to get onto the platforms, using a side gate, in order to catch a train. I don't know how one bought a ticket - presumably on the train.

A column-lined walkway in a North Wales seaside town has been getting an £800,000 makeover to prevent it deteriorating further. Llandudno’s iconic Colonnade has undergone a major restoration, and is now looking very smart.

The concrete art deco structure, a 170-metre covered walkway leading to Happy Valley on the Great Orme headland, has been a prominent feature of the Llandudno promenade since the 1930s, and was re-opened on Friday, March 20 this year.

Ideal viewing platform to watch the Llandudno Tramway.

Pistyll Rhaeadr meaning "waterfall (of) Rhaeadr" is a waterfall 4 miles Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in Powys, Wales, and 16 miles west of Oswestry. It falls in three stages, over a 240-foot cliff-face, and is spectacular, but doesn't compare to other waterfalls in more mountainous regions. When we drove out that day to visit the waterfall, it was a beautiful day but cold, with snow on the surrounding hills.

The road towards the fall is narrow with passing places occasionally, and that day was very icy. At one point Adrian lost of control of the car as it slid down the final slope before the car park. I was not the most popular passenger that day. ;-)

The main photo shows the upper reaches of the waterfall only, and that leads directly on to PiP 1. and finally PiP 2. I needed a much wider angle lens for this photo.

PiP 1 shows the middle stage of the waterfall with a natural 'bridge'

PiP 2 shows the lower reaches of the waterfall continuing to fall.

The station was in effect closed. No booking office, and the main foyer, where this bench is, was also closed. There was a side gate open for those who wanted to catch a train, but I don't know what they did about buying tickets. Is this typical of the railway in Llandudno? Maybe a local could tell me more.

Although it is only 679 feet above sea level, we used the The Great Orme Tramway, which is a cable-hauled 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge tramway in Llandudno, running from Victoria Station to just below the summit of the Great Orme headland.
It is Great Britain's only remaining cable-operated street tramway, and one of only a few surviving in the world, and it is owned by Conwy County Borough Council. The line comprises two sections, where each section is an independent funicular and passengers change cars at the Halfway station. Whilst the upper section runs on its own right of way and is similar to many other funicular lines, the lower section is an unusual street-running funicular. The views to Snowdonia are very good from here - on a clear day. It was slightly hazy on that morning.

Some people were arriving up here in skimpy summer dresses, and took the railway down straight away as it was very windy and chilly up here. Luckily we both had fleeces on, but even so the wind chill factor made it feel uncomfortable. The wind prevented the cable cars from operating.

SC204- street signs

The Welsh Government is obliged to have signs both in Welsh and English. Just as well as because the only signpost that we as tourists could understand was Pier a Phromenad ! ;-)

Tourists can make use of a horse drawn canal boat which travels some of the way along the canal towards the Horseshoe Falls in one direction and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in the other.

Located on the River Dee, near to Llantysilio, this masterpiece of Thomas Telford Engineering is where the Pontcysllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage site begins. He designed this weir to draw water from the River Dee in to the canal, and it became a stunning addition to the landscape. At 460ft (140M) long, it’s a sight to behold.

This year the area has been spoiled by traffic queues and very dangerous parking along the approach road. Emergency vehicles were unable to get through, and the locals were distressed. The falls are quite easy to reach by walking along the canal from Llangollen.

A glorious March day. Parties of school children with their teachers and helpers were busy sketching the Hall, and the gardeners were very busy pruning the avenues of pleached lime trees.

Avenue of Pleached Lime Trees at Erddig

The double avenues of pleached lime trees are a remarkable feature here at Erddig. The trees form a ‘living wall’ and mark the position of the original walled border of the Grade I listed garden, which was later demolished.

They burst into bud around April time, a sure sign that warmer days are here.

The extensive pleached lime tree avenues are pruned by hand. This ancient art, which dates from Roman times, involves connecting branches together to create a shaded walkway to promenade.

It would take one skilled gardener around 10 weeks (about 2 and a half months) to complete the task single-handedly, making around 65,000 cuts – thankfully we have a small team on hand to take on the mammoth challenge!

When we were there on the 18th March this year, the gardeners were out in force doing the pruning, along with parties of school children. The weather was glorious.
