Cliffs at Hunstanton, Norfolk, UK, illuminated by the late afternoon sun shining through shower clouds offshore. This is probably the best exposure of the Red Chalk in the UK.

The top-to-bottom sequence is:

Cenomanian (White) Chalk
-- disconformity -- (~ 2 million year time gap)
Hunstanton Formation ('Red Chalk')
Carstone Formation ('Lower Greensand' - brown!)

View to the north-west. It had been a gloomy December morning, but the cloud started to break and shafts of sunlight broke through and illuminated the Edge and the lower strike vale. Stanage Edge is an escarpment of Rivelin or Chatsworth Grit (Namurian), in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, UK.

The Great Slab on Bowfell - a fantastic feature comprised of a tilted bedding surface of water-lain tuff (volcanic ash). I've watched many walkers pass by within yards of this, en-route to the summit cairn (behind the photographer), yet remaining completely unaware of its existence.

The photo was taken from the larches gully at the west end of Lingmoor Fell.
In the distance, The Band and Bowfell, Rossett Gill and Rossett Pike, Pike o' Stickle, Loft Crag and Thorn Crag.

View NW along Stange Edge. The photo was taken just after a shower had passed over and everything was sparkling wet and clear.

Stanage Edge is an escarpment of Rivelin or Chatsworth Grit (Namurian) in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, UK

There is a very low dip to the east (right-hand side) and a very gentle E-W trending synclinal fold axis crosses the Edge in the middle distance.

Abandoned millstone near Over Owler Tor and Millstone Edge quarries.

There is a maker's identification mark (an 'x') just to the right of the centre hole. This millstone possibly dates from the 18th century and was probably abandoned before completion, due to a flaw in the stone becoming apparent.

Jacobs Ladder is the steep section of path on the Alternative Pennine Way route via Kinder Low

A chaotic looking place of gritstone cliffs and boulders where, in wet weather, the Kinder River falls over the western escarpment. When it's windy, a lot of the water blows back up again.

Best viewed large.

Gritstone cliffs and tors form the banks of the Kinder River high up on the plateau. Almost dry on this occasion, in wet weather the river flows away northwards and then west to fall over the Kinder Downfall on the west escarpment.

Pym Chair is a dramatic gritstone tor on the SW flank of the Kinder plateau. Its distinctive notched shape is a prominent skyline feature visible from a considerable distance away.

Ringing Roger is an out-thrusting ridge of gritstone tors overlooking Edale on the south margin of the Kinder plateau.
There is a good path up the ridge with an easy scramble to finish which I think is a much better and quieter route up to the plateau than the slog up Grindsbrook.
