Ulsterbus outstations about six coaches at the Scottish port to work its own tours in addition to express services into England and Scotland in partnership with National Express, Eurolines and Scottish Citylink. I had a chat with the very ameniable driver, a Scot, who told me that a mechanic travels over from Belfast every so often to service the coaches and only in times of necessity do they (the vehicles) return to Belfast via the ferry. For the 1996 season there were three services worked in conjunction with National Express which were this Birmingham-Belfast day service (921), the London night service (920) plus a new one for 1996 to Nottingham via Preston, Manchester and Sheffield (924). The latter was short lived with Preston and Manchester subsequently transferred to the 921 which at the time of this photograph was non-stop (except for a refreshment break) from Birmingham to Carlisle (1530). Day service passengers from London travelled on the 0830 service 589 to Carlisle and changed there to/from the 921.</div>

Bothe had worked services into from Birmingham and were to return to their originating point (unlike many services that pass through on north-south or south-north through services). Left is Premier Travel Services N451 XVA, a Volvo B10M/Plaxton Expressliner 1, which carries the ‘Express Shuttle’ livery for operation on the service between Cambridge and London. It had worked the 1150 service 314 from Cambridge (due in 1425) and returned on the 1500 service 314 due to arrive Cambridge at 1735. Right is Trathens Travel Services M422 VYD, a Van Hool Alizeé bodied Volvo B10M, that had worked the 0920 service 309 from Paignton (due in at 1410) and returned on the 1500 service 309 due to arrive back in Paignton at 1945. This was the view from one of the Rea Street doors (the southern edge of the terminal). These two bays faced the saw edge draw in bays being used by other departures as emphasised by the coach across their fronts. On the far left is a coach parked in a straight through line. Coaches entered the terminal from Rea Street and left via Mill Lane at the northern end. The open exit doors onto Mill Lane are visible on the right.</div>

Depending on traffic volumes different formats of loading were put to work. The draw in saw tooth arrangement as seen here used lettered bays (with capacity for about 14 coaches). If the straight line format was used the coaches formed four/five straight through lines of about seven coaches each. Those bays were identified by numbers which can be seen hanging from overhead. Then there was a combination of the saw tooth bays and two straight through lines. The 1500 interchange (two hours before) employed the latter format but the 1700 interchange which was not quite so busy used the saw tooth format.</div>
