Reflections of Alhambra

A second look back on our trip to Granada and the Alhambra Palace back in 2006. This is the Palacios Nazaries.

"This is the stunning centrepiece of the Alhambra, the most brilliant Islamic building in Europe, with perfectly proportioned rooms and courtyards, intricately moulded stucco walls, beautiful tiling, fine carved wooden ceilings and elaborate stalactite-like muqarnas vaulting, all worked in mesmerising, symbolic, geometrical patterns. In 2006 we had a holiday in the Andalucia coastal town of Nerja in Spain. From there we had a day trip to this famous old palace. Of course lots of photos taken and here is one of its little arched courtyards and fountains known as the Para Lindaraja Patio.

It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world. The Entrance

A drawbridge and stout wooden doors guard the entrance through these arches to the Ibiza Town inner walled sanctuary. Beyond here lie the narrow shadowed streets and dwellings of this area which climbs up eventually to the cathedral. On the way there we pass many more narrow lanes and alleys which leads us onto the town walls and to the castle and large bastion.

A walk around Ibiza Town is not complete without a stroll along the harbour wall to the harbour lighthouse. One that we unfortunately could not get any nearer than this but it offered good views all around. I tried to find out more about this but that seemed almost impossible.

The main PiP (adjacent photo) shows a more distant view from the start of the jetty and the other PiP shows the view from the lighthouse to the old town itself.

Ibiza has a lot of history. The port was settled in 654 BC by the Phoenicians and after that it saw many invaders and new occupants through the ages. It is no surprise then that such walls as we see here were soon erected and as per usual in such places the churches built on the highest point. The archway leads us right into the inner walled town up to the military sections and cathedral.

The PiP shows one of the many small historic remains along the walls themselves.

As the next set of tourist comes into land, this is a scene that may await the ones that care. Ibiza tends to be known for its wonderful beaches, bustling bays and nightlife but here in old Ibiza town gems like this exist. We are looking up to the Catedra se Santa Maria.

Welcome to Ibiza, one of Spain's Balearic Islands. Above the harbour is the old quarter of Dalt Vila, with the Gothic-style Cathedral de Santa María and views from the Renaissance-era fortifications.

This is our last day of our one week Mediterranean cruise, so its off into the town now to explore...

The start of our Mediterranean Cruise starts from Palma, Mallorca, Spain. Here we see its cathedral with its mountainous backdrop as we sail by, just as the sun starts to set.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, more commonly referred to as La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral. It was begun by King James I of Aragon in 1229 but only finished in 1601.

The Dunes of Maspalomas

A day trip on the Island of Grand Canaria in 2011 brought us to the edge of these dunes. We are quite near the sea here but my photo conveys more a sense of the Safari Desert perhaps. There are signs of tourist having explored the sand giving us scale perhaps but I much prefer the rippling virgin surface here.

A December 2011 cruise around the Canaries brought us to the Spanish paradise holiday destination of Tenerife. After driving up through the rain forest we reach the arid moon-like plateau. As you can see a place of mysterious colour and wonder caused by countless eruptions and larva flows.
The whole island is dominated by its still active volcano, Mount Teide at 12,188ft . Its summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic . Its most recent eruption occurred in late 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift
In front of us is the strange pillar Roque Cinchado at 27-metre high, composed mostly of volcanoclastic sedimentary rock layers. Its upper layers have been intruded by two sills of lava, which have made the upper part of the pillar more resistant to erosion.
For the more adventurous the peak can be reached by a cablecar, a trip that one day, I still hope to do.

Taken outside the little church of Parroquia De Santa Ana in the small village of Altea Le Vella on the Costa Blanca in Spain. This gentleman told me he had come to sit on here every day for the past forty years. We sat bsides him as we ate our picnic.
Snapped in 2018 when the world seemed a more restful place. Best viewed full size.

We stumble upon this popular-with-the Brits beach resort whist flitting away our last hours on the Island. This is the kind of view that many British holidaymakers associate with Majorca - I think. Located exactly one mile from the end of runway 06L, we still have time for a last Sangria before entering the airport, losing the rented car and boarding our plane. Alas, all good things must come to an end! See PiP
