The counting of votes was manipulated, imposing the defeat to the general. As opponent to the regime, he became persona non grata to be eliminated. Attracted to an ambush in Spain by two supposedly opponents to the regime - in fact two agents of PIDE, the political police of Salazar - he was shot down at the age of 58, together with his 34 years old Brazilian secretary. The murderers buried them roughly in this place, at Cortijo de la Pericia, near the brook de la Tranca, about 10 km southeast of Villanueva del Fresno, on February 13th 1965, returning to Portugal. The Spanish authorities only became aware of this assassination when a dog of two teenagers digged out a skull on next April 24th. The victims were identified a few days later.
This plaque was posted 20 years after the assassination, being present the international commission of tribute to the general.
