The Kota (Kov) of the Nilgiri Hills are a tiny Dravidian-speaking community, probably only around two thousand people in seven historic villages. Traditionally, they were indispensable artisans to surrounding tribes: they forged tools, made wooden implements and created distinctive black pottery, while receiving grain and dairy instead of money. Unusually, their ritual life once centered on the smithy itself, where fire, metal and craftwork were bound up with the sacred. Kota society is organized in patrilineal clans, and their religion features village deities with specialist priests and diviners who historically used trance to communicate with the gods. Many Kotas today farm, study and work in modern professions, yet women still make ritual pottery, musicians still perform at festivals, and the community keeps a strong sense of being ancient hill “kings” rather than marginal artisans.
