Day trip with good friend, Jeff Jackson in the Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley (and Charleston) County, South Carolina. Our target species were the coastal plains fringed orchids and, of course, whatever else we could find to photograph.

Another long day trip back to the mountains of northeast Georgia. My good friend, Alan Cressler, and I were re-visiting a remote mountain bog to check on the bloom status of the native orchid, Mountain Small Spreading Pogonia we had seen in bud the previous week. We were not disappointed! We also found another very rare wildflower along the way.

This morning, I made the 3-hour round trip to a state park in north Georgia; Tallulah Gorge State Park. Almost 24 hours earlier, I had head from a good friend that she had just seen a nice group of Malaxis unifolia or Green Adder's-mouth orchids along the roadside. I made every effort to visit the site where I did find some beautiful specimens of this orchid. This species has some of the smallest flowers of any of our southeastern, native orchids.

Results of my annual, mid-summer trip to the coastal plain of the Carolinas for orchids and wildflowers. The first stop on the trip was the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina. A great day for photography - overcast but no rain.
