As a Paris lover I had to pay tribute on that day to the Parisian covered passages, to their charm of yesteryear and to their often remarkable architecture.
They are a set of lanes traced in the middle of buildings, housing commercial and artistic galleries, restaurants and tea rooms - some of them in Art Deco style, and covered with a glass roof that shelters from bad weather and lets in the daylight.
Most of these passages were built in the first half of the 19th century to allow a wealthy clientele to shop and dine under cover.

The Galerie Vivienne (main photo and PiP 1, 2, 3), 1823, close to the Palais-Royal, is one of the most emblematic. It was listed as a historical monument in 1974.
With a length of 176 m, it is decorated in a neo-classical Pompeian style designed by François-Jacques Delannoy, with mosaics, paintings and sculptures exalting trade. It includes caducei, anchors and horns of plenty that adorn the half-moon windows, as well as goddesses and nymphs decorating the rotunda.
The gallery is covered by an elegant glass roof
In 2019, the gallery is twinned with the famous Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussels.
[Various sources]
In PiP4, a brief glimpse of the magnificent Colbert passage, a stone's throw from the previous one.

The Romanesque co-cathedral of St John (Baptist) of Valletta was built between 1573 and 1577 by the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem to the designs of the Maltese military architect Ġlormu Cassar.
The exterior of the cathedral is built in the typical mannerist style of its architect Girolamo Cassar (PiP #1). The portal is flanked by Doric columns supporting an open balcony from which the Grand Master used to address the people on important occasions.
The extremely & wonderfully ornate interior (PiPs #2 to 7) was extensively decorated by Mattia Preti, a Calabrian artist and knight, at the height of the Baroque period. Preti designed the intricate carved stone walls and painted the vaulted ceiling and side altars with scenes from the life of John the Baptist. It can be seen that the artist skilfully created an illusion of three-dimensionality through his use of shadows and placement. The Maltese limestone, which gives its colour to the façade of the building (as to much of the city's historic buildings) in which the cathedral is built, lends itself particularly well to such complex sculpture.
The floor of the church, which is made entirely of marble, consists of cenotaphs depicting 405 knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
The church has eight chapels, each representing a hospitable language. Many renowned craftsmen contributed to the splendour of the interior decoration.

The painting "The Beheading of St. John the Baptist" (1608 - PiP #8) by Caravaggio (1571-1610) is the most famous work in the church. One of the painter's masterpieces, the largest canvas he painted and one of the few he signed. The painting is displayed in the Oratory for which it was painted. Restored in the late 1990s in Florence, the painting is one of the most impressive uses of Caravaggio's chiaroscuro style.

Crossed by the river La Rimarde, the traditional village of Courcelles (PiP 4), in the department of Loiret, France, is quoted at the beginning of the IXth century under the name of Curceles. It was part of the royal domain. On several occasions, this fief was included in the prerogative of the Dukes of Orleans, and finally returned to the crown.
Remarkable vestiges of its rich history mark out the path of the visitor who take the pleasure to walk there.
Facing the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur (PiP 1), we think we are in front of a rather banal church, when we discovers from behind a vast ruined choir (PiP 5). This is the unfinished choir of the original church, dating from the XIIth century, which adjoins the Saint-Hubert chapel, built in 1271 and restored in 1995.
The castle (PiP 2), called the castle of Courcelles Le Roy, which would date from the 12th century, is a fortified castle where Louis IX stayed in 1247. Charles VIII, in 1493, received the Florentine ambassadors there, and Anne de Bretagne gave birth to a son there.
An old wash-house on the Rimarde river (PiP 3), nicely restored, testifies to the tradition that has never ceased to animate this village full of charms.

The Times They Are A-Changing - Les Temps Sont En Train De Changer

Come gather 'round people - Venez, rassemblez-vous, braves gens
And admit that the waters - Et admettez que les eaux
Around you have grown - Autour de vous ont monté
And accept it that soon - Acceptez que bientôt
You'll be drenched to the bone - Vous serez trempés jusqu'aux os

If your time to you - Si votre vécu
Is worth savin' - Vaut la peine d'être sauvé
Then you better start Swimmin' - Vous feriez mieux de vous mettre à nager
Or you'll sink like a stone - Ou vous coulerez comme une pierre
For the times they are a-changin' - Car les temps sont en train de changer.

Come writers and critics - Venez, écrivains et critiques
Who prophesize with your pen - Qui prophétisez de la pointe de votre stylo
And keep your eyes wide - Gardez les yeux grands ouverts
The chance won't come again - L'occasion ne se représentera pas
And don't speak too soon - Ne parlez pas trop tôt
For the wheel's still in spin - Car la roue n'a pas encore fini de tourner
And there's no tellin' who - Et il n'y a aucun moyen de dire qui
That it's namin'. - Elle va nommer.
For the loser now - Car le perdant d'aujourd'hui
Will be later to win - Sera le gagnant de demain

[EN] In 1827, the architect François-Christian Gau built a new church on Place Bellechasseune in Paris, which was named Sainte-Clotilde - at the request of the Queen of Portugal, Amélie d'Orléans.

A neo-gothic style building, the church is dedicated to Saint Clotilde - born around 474, a Burgundian princess who became Queen of the Franks by marrying Clovis, whom she helped to convert to Christianity - and to Saint Valérie, virgin and martyr of Limoges.
In 1897, on the occasion of the fourteenth centenary of the baptism of Clovis, the church was raised to the dignity of "minor basilica" by Pope Leo XIII.
The neo-gothic basilica is 96 m long and 38 m wide. Its two spires on the façade are 70 m high.
The interior is beautifully illuminated and one can see remarkable stained glass windows [PIP] (roses by Thibaut, master glassmaker of the 19th century), paintings by Jules-Eugène Lenepveu (Chapel of the Holy Virgin), sculptures by James Pradier and Francisque Duret (Way of the Cross) as well as a series of sculptures by Eugène Guillaume and notable bas-reliefs [PIP]...
The building dominates the Square Samuel-Rousseau with its chestnut trees, sophoras and Judean trees, where a bas-relief representing César Franck [PIP] erected in 1891 by Alfred-Charles Lenoir.

Born on December 10, 1822 in Liege, died on November 8, 1890 in Paris, a Belgian teacher, organist and composer, naturalized as a French citizen in 1870, César Franck was one of the great figures of French musical life in the second half of the 19th century.
In the bas-relief, an angel seems to protect the composer sitting in front of the keyboard of his organ and prey to the creative process.
This square honours the French composer, organist and musicographer Samuel Rousseau (1853-1904), who was choirmaster at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde.

From 1859 to 1890 César Franck was the owner of the famous and majestic 46-stop Cavaillé-Coll organs installed in 1859 [PIP].
He inaugurated a line of illustrious organists who, as holders of the same organs, brilliantly populate the French organ school in the rank of performers as well as composers:
César Franck: 1859-1890.
Gabriel Pierné: 1890-1898.
Charles Tournemire: 1898-1939.
Joseph-Ermend Bonnal: 1942-1944.
Jean Langlais: 1945-1987.
Jacques Taddei and Pierre Cogen: 1987-1993.
Jacques Taddei: 1993-2012.
Olivier Penin: since 2012.

It is located on the axis of rue Royale and avenue Dauphine (left bank).

The 18th century was in France a golden age for the construction of bridges in terms of both the number of those built and the progress made in the execution and structure of this type of structure. The George V Bridge is one of these remarkable structures.
It was built from 1751 to 1763 according to the plans of Jean Hupeau.
It is composed of nine arches with unequal openings that taper slightly from the centre to the banks. The vaults are in the shape of a basket handle with five centres and a large radius of about 28 metres. The structure was built according to the rule of the fifth, then accepted by all, and according to which the piers had to receive in thickness the fifth of the opening of the arches. Jean-Rodolphe Perronet, who supervised the completion of the construction work, later disputed the value of this principle and argued that the strength of the bridges would be increased by reducing the thickness of the piers, as this would free up the passage of water. It was a real revolution when at the Neuilly bridge (1768-1774) he reduced the ratio of the thickness of the piers to the opening of the arches to 1/9.
The slope of the Orléans bridge is very slight, less than one centimetre per metre.
The bridge now has two lanes for cars, two tramway tracks and a sidewalk. On the occasion of the deconfinement in May 2020, the west lane of the bridge is transformed into a two-way bicycle path as a transitional measure.

— Olivier Messiaen, Article de juillet 1939.

Charles Tournemire, French organist, improviser and composer born in Bordeaux in 1870, died in 1939.
He composed the Mystic Organ, a collection accompanying the service of every Sunday and every great feast of the Roman liturgical calendar, with the exception of Advent and Lent when the organ is silent.
Each collection consists of five pieces of varying length - the first four are always short: Prelude to the Introït, Offertory, Elevation, Communion, and Terminal Piece, the latter being longer and taking various musical forms. The plainchant themes used are borrowed from the Gregorian repertoire of the day, either antiphonal or gradual.
It is one of the most complete works since Bach, although in a very different spirit as it is not didactic, but also innovative and covering a spectrum of unequaled amplitude.

"Charles Tournemire's Mystical Organ has been able [...] to modernize the plainchant, to adapt the Debussy harmonies and polytonality to the jubilant arabesques of the alleluia, in a supple rhythm of astonishing topicality. Such a work is truly catholic, liturgical, lively. It is perhaps, at the present time, the masterpiece of sacred art. »
. tour des Temps ;
. tour des Lois ;
. tour des Nombres ;
. tour des Lettres.

The National Library of France (BnF), inaugurated on 30 March 1995 by the President of the Republic François Mitterrand, is the heir to the royal collections built up since the Middle Ages. It has one of the richest collections in the world.
On 14 July 1988, François Mitterrand announced "the construction and fitting out of one of the largest and most modern libraries in the world... (which) will have to cover all fields of knowledge, be available to all, use the most modern data transmission technologies, be able to be consulted at a distance and be linked to other European libraries".
The architectural project of Dominique Perrault is selected by the international competition of ideas of the library composed of a jury of architects and cultural personalities. The building is characterized by four large angular towers of 79 m and 22 floors each symbolically depicting four open books. Each tower has a name:
. tower of the Times ;
. tower of Laws;
. tower of Numbers ;
. tower of Letters.
. tour des Temps ;
. tour des Lois ;
. tour des Nombres ;
. tour des Lettres.
