The background is from "Solitaire Pool, 2012" by Eskayel. #3 is from a 1930s manual on the art of kissing. #5 is Nepalese, but I don't know what it says. If you know, please tell me! And #7, of course, is my real resolution for 2014.

The title is from E. M. Forster, of course, from his novel Howard's End: "Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer."

The upper background is from a Time magazine photo of an electrical storm over the Grand Canyon. The man in the dog mask is from the Archie McPhee catalog. The lower background is from a painting by Gordon Onslow Ford. The creature is a late Jurassic marine reptile called a Dakosaurus.

The colorful strip in between is from a computer model of superstrings. Superstring theory holds that our universe has many more dimensions than meet the eye—dimensions tightly curled into the folded fabric of the cosmos.

Scientist and sleeping woman from a painting by Norman Saunders on the cover of Marvel Science Stories (April-May 1939). The 16 paintings are, of course, by Wassily Kandinsky. Mediocre sine waves by yours truly (note to self: don't try to draw sine waves when your brain is full of coffee.)

This is an experiment (all by hand, not in Photoshop) intended to celebrate the water images of photographer Rebecca Resinski. I discovered that this sort of mosaic isn't easy to do by hand, that it's very easy to cut the pieces just a little bit skewed, thus throwing off the angles...

You're looking at four different photos of one skull of a newborn baby. Starting in the lower left and going clockwise: front view, back view (tipped to the left), side view, top view. The minerals in the orbits are chalcopyrite and diabolite. With markers and acrylic paint.

I think newborns are fascinating, especially their heads. I used to be a nurse in a newborn nursery—most entertaining job I ever had.

One of my favorite books of all time is a slim masterpiece by Italo Calvino: Invisible Cities. In this book, the aged Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Tartars, listens as Marco Polo describes the cities he has visited in his wide travels through the empire. The cities are very strange, their descriptions are prose poetry, and they have names that sound like the names of women: Zenobia, Eutropia, Beersheba, Isaura...

The clouds are from a photograph by Rebecca Resinski. The quotation is from Invisible Cities, translated from the Italian by William Weaver.

Cut-paper collage postcard. Photos of horses in motion all by Eadweard Muybridge. Still photos by Keith Carter. Muybridge, who did most of his work in the 1870s-80s, was a real pioneer: his documentation of animals & humans in motion is influential to this day.

One issue he resolved has to do with the horse's gallop: Muybridge was frustrated with centuries of depictions of galloping horses with their front legs extended out front & up high, and their back legs extended out back & up high. He didn't think that posture ever happens in the gallop, and he proved it. He found that there is indeed a moment in the gallop when all four of the horse's feet are off the ground, but it happens when their legs are gathered underneath them. If you look at the second row from the top, the second photo from the left shows that moment.
