A Viceroy butterfly, not a Monarch. The black strip on the hind wings proves that.

My first photo ever of this lovely, small butterfly. I saw six altogether, but only this one sat long enough for a couple of shots. I saw also the name "Baltimore Brushfoot" in my Peterson Field Guide of (Northamerican) Eastern Butterflies.

Today was a phenomenal discovery day for me. Right now is the time the Monarchs are gathering at Pointe Pelee, at the southernmost tip of Ontario, Canada, bevor they migrate to Mexico. We drove 104 miles today, to Port Huron and back, and while driving I was able to count 86 Monarchs flying by our car, all in the south-easterly direction. These two I photographed by the lighthouse although there were many that flew by me.
