Die Brancaleoni di Piobbico waren eine alte Familie aus den Marken, die sechshundert Jahre lang die gleichnamige Grafschaft in der Nähe des Herzogtums Urbino regierte.

Die Zeit, in der sich die ersten Brancaleoni (Brancaleone senior) im Gebiet von Piobbico niederließen, geht auf die Zeit vor dem Jahr 1000 zurück, und ihre tatsächliche Herkunft ist ungewiss. Der Historiker Antonio Tarducci vertrat die Ansicht, dass diese Nachkommen germanischer (im Gefolge eines Kaisers nach Italien gekommen waren) oder doch italienischer Abstammung waren.
Sie ließen sich auf jeden Fall in der zentralen Apenninregion nieder, nachdem sie diese erobert und mit einem der ältesten Statuten Europas verwaltet hatten.

Heute herrscht jedoch die Überzeugung vor, dass es sich um einen italienischen Ursprung handelt: Ein Zweig der Frangipani aus Rom soll sich in Piobbico niedergelassen haben, woraus mehrere Zweige entstanden sind: die beiden Hauptfamilien, Mercatello, Castel Pecorari, Rocca Leonella und Casteldurante. Der bekannteste Vertreter dieser Linie war Kardinal Latino Frangipani Brancaleoni (+1294) Der erste Brancaleoni herrschte über eine Reihe von Familien.

Die ersten Brancaleoni herrschten im Grafenrang, ohne von jemandem investiert worden zu sein, und besaßen somit ein Allodiallehen (Privatbesitz fürstlicher Familien; lehensfreier Grundbesitz.): nur von 1576, mit Antonio II, bis 1631 wurde ein Treueeid gegenüber den Herzögen von Urbino und dann gegenüber der Kirche verlangt.

Im Jahr 1318 verwalteten Pazzo und Federico, Piobbico, Erben von Montefeltrano (Montefeltrano II da Montefeltro (gestorben 1255) war ein italienischer Condottiero, der von 1242 bis zu seinem Tod Herr von Urbino war. Er war auch Graf von Montefeltro.

Noch im 11. Jahrhundert war die Burg ein befestigtes Gebäude. Es wurde von den Grafen Guido und Roberto vergrößert und in einen Adelssitz umgewandelt, aber vor allem im 16. Jahrhundert wurden wichtige Arbeiten durchgeführt, an denen Federico Brandani, die Zuccaris und der Episcopio beteiligt waren.

Die Räume des Piano Nobile waren mit vergoldeten Stuckarbeiten und Fresken verziert, die mythologische Episoden und die Verherrlichung der Familie Brancaleoni darstellten (die Familiengruppe mit Antonio II., seiner Frau Laura Cappello und ihren neun Kindern ist sehr ausdrucksstark).
Die Grafschaft Piobbico hatte eine lange Geschichte, war der Sitz der Familie.

Der Landkreis Piobbico hatte eine Fläche von etwa 50 Quadratkilometern und einige hundert Einwohner. Es grenzte an die Grafschaften Apecchio (unter der Herrschaft der Ubaldini, erbitterte Feinde der Brancaleoni), Casteldurante, Mercatello und Cagli, die zum Herzogtum Urbino und später zum Kirchenstaat gehörten.

Im Zentrum der Grafschaft lag Piobbico mit seinem majestätischen Palast unterhalb des Monte Nerone, im Osten Rocca Leonella, im Norden Villa mit dem Monte Lego und der Grenze zum Castel Pecorari, im Westen der Monte Gerino.
Es war eines der am längsten bestehenden Lehnsgüter und erlosch viele Jahre nach dem Herzogtum Della Rovere, dessen Vasall es war.
