Off the main track.

This photo was taken by a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera and a KOWA 1:3.5/55mm lens with a Kowa L39•3C(UV) ø67 filter using Kodak Portra 400 [220] film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

We didn't get snowed in, as the gritters had done their job at keeping the roads clear. Just got back from a trip up to Alston [Crossing Cafe / Wooley's] for some food and a bit of a look out.

Almost all of this all disappeared overnight as a bank of warmer air arrived ...

Pulled into the open area next to the cattle grid, to allow oncoming vehicles to pass.
Then I spotted the way the tree branch framed the fellside, so got out to snap the view !

Looking down onto Dragon Hill - that flat top is man-made. It was probably levelled by the Dobunni, a local Celtic tribe, and used for ceremonial purposes as there is evidence of fires and ritual on the top.

[3] The HFF is to keep sheep and visitors off the Uffington Horse, the head is on the edge of my image.

the power of growing trees - over the past three decades (or more) the tree has gradually split the boulder into two. Getting a decent image of this place is proving difficult, the road is busy and the alignment doesn't help.

Stwlan Dam impounds the upper storage reservoir for the Tan-y-Grisiau pumped storage hydro-electricity scheme, also known as the Ffestiniog Power Station, which was commissioned in 1963. This type of station can respond to a sudden peak demand in seconds and the power required to "recharge" the system evens out the base load demand overnight. Full output is 360 MW and operates at 72% efficiency - the missing percentage represents the use of electricity to pump water back up to Llyn Stwlan, at times of otherwise low demand - such as overnight.

View from the garden, looking east.
The cloud covered peak of Great Gable is just above the white plant, and Scafell is visible, in clouds, at the top of the post on the right.
