My National Express ‘ticket’ for a ride from Norwich bus station to Mildenhall on the 1355 service 728 on Friday 26 July 2024. Booked on-line with the ‘ticket’ printed at home on A4 paper.

Bus tickets issued on the vehicles of Coach Services Limited of Thetford – 26 Jul 2024.

The ticket on the left was issued on the second bus I travelled on today, CS63 BUS working the 0835 Bury St. Edmunds to Thetford service 84.

That on the right was issued on my third bus, CS22 BUS working the 0925 Thetford to Norwich service 90. That carries the ‘Breckland Beeline’ logo as part of the branding for service 90.

A bus ticket issued for a journey on the 0850 Simonds of Botesdale service 304 from Bury St. Edmunds to Stanton on Wednesday 19 June 2024. The service continued to Diss where the company is based. In May 2024 the Simonds business was acquired by Vectare and the Simonds services are to be rebranded.

The bus was SN56 AGV, a Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TL that had been new to Lothian Buses (813) in December 2006. It had been operated by Xelabus (as G14 XEL) then Weardale Travel, Stanhope before joining the Simonds fleet.

A Mulleys Motorways bus ticket issued for a journey on the 0740 service 355 from Mildenhall to Bury St. Edmunds on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

The bus was CN56 FDU, an Optare Solo 920SL (9.2 metre long slimline model) was new to Bebb Travel of Llantwit Fadre, South Wales in October 2006. Most 355 service trips are worked by double deckers although this first trip of the day from Mildenhall to Bury St. Edmunds is worked by a vehicle from a duty that mainly covers Bury St. Edmunds town services.

Megabus coach 'ticket' - Cambridge-Norwich 9 Feb 2024

A ‘ticket’ for travel by Megabus service M87 from Cambridge to Norwich. Booked online and printed at home.

The way of the modern world that tickets aren't what they once were. An A4 piece of paper doesn't quite have the same charm and souvenir value as a colourful printed ticket of old. Some passengers don't even have a paper ticket on Megabus, they just show their reference number on their mobile phone screen to the driver and that's it.

The Cambridge boarding point on the 'ticket' is shown as Victoria Avenue, Jesus College but this is incorrect. This is the boarding point for journeys from Norwich towards Birmingham. The correct boarding point for journeys from Birmingham towards Norwich is Maids Causeway, Fair Street.

(I emailed Megabus about the error and received an immediate thank you by return. They said they look into the matter).

Until the dawn of on-line booking for coach journeys coach operators like National Express, Premier Travel, Yelloway etc had one or maybe more booking agents in just about every town.

Such agents included bus station offices and travel agencies but there were hundreds of small businesses where tickets could be booked. Newsagents were perhaps amongst the most numerous.

The agent held stocks of official tickets and would write out a ticket for the passenger who would pay the appropriate fare. Depending on the system employed the agent might in the first instance have to make a phone call the coach operator’s office or Chart Room to ascertain if seats were available otherwise a confirmation copy would be sent to the operator. As technology advance the agent would tap into the computer based reservation system to obtain seat allocations and booking reference numbers.

Ticket sets usually comprised a Confirmation copy, an Outward journey ticket, a return journey ticket and an accounting copy. Carbon paper was inserted between each of the sheets. Handling carbon paper was often a messy business with fingertips getting black in the process. In time the tickets had a coating of carbon which removed the need for the separate carbon paper sheets although fingertips still got dirty.

National Express moved on to use airline style tickets within individual folders. The cover and outward journey ticket are shown here. (The ticket is the actual outward journey ticket which I never used).

National Express moved on to use airline style tickets within individual folders. The three images shown here are:

(1) The front cover which shows the names of the different brands used by National Express at the time.
(2) The page within the folder which shows the various services forming the passenger journey. In this case using three different services for a Pontypridd-Birmingham-Cambridge-Mildenhall journey. This total journey only cost £10 as it was a special promotional offer.
(3) The back cover which shows the ticket to have been booked at the Mulleys Motorways office in Bury St. Edmunds

National Express moved on to use airline style tickets contained within individual folders. The three covers shown here carry the ‘double N’ arrow logo, the National Bus Company logo used by National Travel from 1972. This became the National Express logo post-privatisation.

Ticket number G 3 813 773 is one of the earlier examples. The covers for ticket numbers M 0 679 951 and R 2 605653 carry later designs and both show the names of the different brands used by National Express.
