I have recreated the two inscriptions, as I could not get all the lettering in a readable condition from the photographs that I took.
The cemetery has numerous individual military graves of soldiers and sailors who died in the nearby camp and in Newhaven Military Hospital.
Many of those interred here are from the Canadian Armed Forces of WW1. A couple of miles away, at Cuckmere Haven, there is a less formal, but nevertheless very poignant, memorial to Canadian troops who were killed in their camp at the spot, by German aircraft, in WW2. Memorial to the 97 soldiers - mostly frorm the Royal Norfolk Regiment - that were massacred at Le Paradis, Northern France on 27th May 1940, after surrendering as POWs.

[The officer that ordered the shooting was convicted of this war crime, and was executed in 1949]

Although this commemorates a centenary from 1915-16, I don't seem to have photographed this plaque until it was replaced following a refurbishment of the station in early 2026.

Dumbarton

The Boer War Memorial in Dumbarton is a red‑granite Celtic cross in College Park beside the Municipal Buildings, unveiled in 1904 to honour the 12 men from the burgh who died in the South African War (1899–1902). It is one of Dumbarton’s most distinctive civic monuments and remains in excellent condition today. Quoted from the Imperial War Museums website

The main inscription reads:

“ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF DUMBARTON IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LEFT THE BURGH TO FIGHT FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE WAR. 1899–1902. ‘DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI.’”

Boer War Memorial on the "Village Green" in Tynemouth, looking a little lonely behind a low fence.
Designed by A.B. Plummer, it was unveiled on 13 October 1903.

This memorial commemorates the fallen of both World Wars. The Roll of Honour for those who died in WW1 is in the local hospital which was built as a memorial. Those who died in WW2 are honoured on the two tablets that flank this memorial.
