Auf der Landesgartenausstellung 2026 in Ellwangen wurde im Kreuzgang der Ellwanger Basilika St. Vitus dieses originelle Blumengesteck mit frischen Pflanzen gezeigt, das mich sehr beeindruckt hat. Die wechselnden Blumenschauen des Fachverbands Deutscher Floristen in St. Vitus waren ein Highlight der Landesgartenschau. Zum Foto: Ich habe die Umgebung des Gestecks entfernt, um die Wirkung zu verbessern.

At the 2026 State Garden Show in Ellwangen, this original flower arrangement made with fresh plants was displayed in the cloister of St Vitus Basilica in Ellwangen, and it made a great impression on me. The changing floral displays organised by the Professional Association of German Florists at St Vitus were a highlight of the State Garden Show. About the photo: I have cropped out the background around the arrangement to enhance the effect.

Dieser recht große, auffällig gefärbte Tagfalter kann im Juli in Wiesen beobachtet werden. Es ist der Kleine Perlmuttfalter (Issoria lathonia), dessen Raupe sich von Acker-Stiefmütterchen ernährt. Er ist (noch) nicht gefährdet.

This fairly large, strikingly coloured butterfly can be seen in meadows in July. It is the Queen of Spain fritillary (Issoria lathonia), whose caterpillar feeds on field pansies. It is not (yet) endangered.

Es war sonnig und warm, aber sehr windig, als ich diesen Segelfalter (Iphiclides podalirius) auf diesem Schmetterlingsstrauch (Buddleja) fand. Gut festgekrallt trotzte er den Windböen. Seit den letzten Jahren finde ich immer wieder diese Tagfalterart, die vor Jahren noch eine ansolute Rarität war. Offenbar sind Segelfalter Profiteure des Klimawandels.

It was sunny and warm but very windy when I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) on a butterfly bush. Firmly clinging on, it defied the gusts of wind. In recent years I’ve been encountering this butterfly species again and again, whereas years ago it was still an absolute rarity. Apparently, Scarce Swallowtails are beneficiaries of climate change.

Bei einer Wanderung entdeckte ich diesen kleinen farbenprächtigen Schwärmer, der mit hoher Geschwindigkeit die Blüten eines Schmetterlingstrauches (Buddleja) zum Saugen von Nektar besuchte. Es handelte sich um den Hummelschwärmer (Hemaris fuciformis), einem bei uns in Franken recht seltenen Schwärmer, der tagaktiv ist. Für mich war es der Erstfund. Im PiP sind mehr Einzelheiten zu sehen.

Whilst out walking, I spotted this small, colourful hawk-moth, which was darting at high speed between the flowers of a butterfly bush (Buddleja) to feed on nectar. It was the Broad‑bordered Bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis), a species of hawk-moth that is quite rare here in Franconia and is active during the day. This was my first record of the species. More details can be seen in the PiP.

Mein ca. 1,80 m großer Säulenkaktus, der im Hauskeller den Winter überdauert und im Sommer im Garten steht, hat dieses Jahr sechs Blütenknospen. Im Laufe der letzten Tage sind alle aufgeblüht. Die Blütenöffnung erfolgt in der Dämmerung und bis zur Morgendämmerung ist die Blüte vorbei. Das Foto machte im letzten Sonnenlicht. Der Blütendurchmesser beträgt ca. 15 cm.

My columnar cactus, which is about 1.80 m tall and spends the winter in the basement and the summer out in the garden, has produced six flower buds this year. Over the past few days, all of them have opened. The flowers open at dusk, and by dawn they are already finished. I took the photo in the last sunlight. The flower is approximately 15 cm in diameter.

Diese wirklich am ganzen Körper knallrote Feuerlibelle (Crocothemis erythraea) fand ich kürzlich zum ersten Mal in der Nähe eines Weinbergs. Feuerlibellen sind ursprünglich in den warmen Regionen Südeuropas, Afrikas und Vorderasiens beheimatet und wanderten gelegentlich in warmen Sommern bis nach Mitteleuropa. Seit den 1990er-Jahren hat sich die Art in Mitteleuropa "festgesetzt" und wird immer wieder in Deutschland beobachtet. In Süddeutschland ist sie inzwischen nicht selten. Mittlerweile kommt sie sogar in Norddeutschland vor.
Achtung: Sie kann mit roten Heidelibellen-Arten verwechselt werden.

This striking dragonfly, the bright‑red Scarlet Dragonfly (Crocothemis erythraea), was one I recently encountered for the first time near a vineyard. Scarlet Dragon flies are originally native to the warm regions of southern Europe, Africa, and Western Asia, and in warm summers they occasionally migrated as far as Central Europe. Since the 1990s, the species has become established in Central Europe and is regularly observed in Germany. In southern Germany it is now fairly common, and it even occurs in northern Germany today.
Please note: It can be confused with red sympetrum species.

Diesen Segelfalter (Iphiclides podalirius) fand ich auf einer Luzernenwiese in der Nähe meines Heimatortes. Bei genauerem Hinsehen sieht man, dass das rechte "Schwänzchen" und ein Teil des rechten Hinterflügels fehlt, also abgepickt wurde. Der Falter hat wahrscheinlich den Angriff eines Vogels überlebt. Segelfalter gelten als die schönsten europäischen Tagfalter. Sie waren in den vergangenen Jahren als sehr bedroht eingestuft. Inzwischen habe sich aber z.B. in Franken stellenweise stabile Populationen gebildet. Eine erfreuliche Entwicklung.

I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) in an alfalfa meadow near my hometown. On closer inspection you can see that the right “tail” and part of the right hindwing are missing, clearly pecked off. So the butterfly survived a bird attack. Scarce Swallowtails are considered the most beautiful Europea butterflies. In recent years they were classified as highly endangered. In the meantime, however, stable populations have formed in some regions, for example in Franconia. A pleasing development.
