Antarctic sea ice, with an ice shelf in the distance. As we finish 2023 there is a record low extent of Antarctic sea ice, following similar lows in Arctic sea ice earlier in the year. This works well viewed large.

This is probably the sole remaining flying example of a Lockheed Hudson, used extensively as a light bomber and for coastal patrols in the early years of WW2. This is painted as an Australian Mk111 and flies at the Temora Aviation Museum in NSW. More photos (one with a Canberra) in the PiPs.

The sole flying Boomerang fighter fires up its engine at the Temora Aviation Museum. See PiP for the aircraft flying. Processed with ON1 software.

The Boomerang was developed in some haste in Australia from the Wirraway (and Harvard) as the Japanese advanced during WW2. Before they went into action other fighters (such as the red-nosed Kittyhawk in the background) were available, so they were used for ground attack.

Taken at our former rural property. This is a Cessna aircraft flying very low indeed to check the power lines. It was literally following the contours of the ground - in the PiP it is seen having "climbed the hill". I was prompted to post this because yesterday I saw a helicopter doing inspections, from a greater height and with an observer equipped with a camera and very long lens - a somewhat safer process.

Almost three years ago, I posted a series of images from a little village called Nerrigundah and put them into an Album. The village was built following a gold rush here in 1861. In 1866 while holding up the whole town and making a gold robbery, a gang of bushrangers killed a local policeman here. This is the memorial to him (click on the PiP to read the story) .

Sadly, the vast bushfires of late 2019-early 2020 almost destroyed Nerrigundah entirely. Many of the locals sheltered in the Fire Shed (the green building at right) and only a handful of houses survived. The base around the memorial has been replaced, but the historic shops and other buildings have all gone - this was taken from about the same angle as the PiP.

I had intended to post this on a Friday, but it really doesn't feel right for HFF....

For the next few days I shall be almost entirely offline due to other commitments (all good). Best wishes all, especially to Andy for your ongoing recovery.

In Bodalla, All Saints church is an unmissable sight near the main road. Built in 1881, it looks as though it would be far more at home in the English countryside. See also PiPs.

Emus are Australia's national bird and are found across the continent. I was pleased to find this pair wandering around a local National Park. It was a slight concern when one turned around and took more interest in the camera, as they can become aggressive at times.

Mekong Meeting

We had just arrived in Luang Prabang and decided to take the ferry across the Mekong River. Shortly after, when we saw the ferry returning, we did a complete "double take" - just look at that car on the ferry!

It turned out that the car is a quite rare 1928 Graham-Paige, being driven around the world by a remarkable Argentinian family. At this stage they had been on the road for eleven years, with four children born on the way. They still are travelling, now confined by the CV19 in South America, and have been to every continent except Antarctica. When I took this they had published a book "Spark Your Dream" about their travels to help cover their expenses (it's still available online).

A very pleasant and surprising meeting and an enjoyable and memorable turn to our day. (See also PiPs).

Very shortly after I post this, we'll be on our way. First stop is Singapore, then onward to England (briefly) before heading across to Norway for a Hurtigruten trip before returning to Oz via Oslo and Copenhagen. I expect our aircraft will be a few sizes larger than this. :-) Here's a matching link.

This Braidwood building is named "Tidmarsh". The house has been restored to its original condition in recent years, complete with a shingle roof. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Back in the early 1860s this was used as a police barracks. Later it became the residence of the Superintendent in charge of the local police force. With the problems caused by the Clarke gang of bushrangers, the police numbers grew to about 150, by far the largest in any country district. It is worth noting at this point that it seems there was a rather 'distant' relationship between the police and the Special Constables (details with previous image).
