The butterfly has a wingspan of approximately 40 to 48 mm. The undersides of the wings feature an inconspicuous brown to grey-brown mottled pattern. A characteristic feature is the black eyespot with a white center near the tip of the forewing, often ringed with orange. The uppersides differ by sex: females display large orange patches, whereas males are almost entirely dark brown. It is found in nutrient-poor and damp grasslands, along roadsides and forest edges, in meadows, and in wildlife-friendly gardens. The butterflies fly in a single generation per year from June to September. Diet: The adult butterflies feed on nectar from various flowers such as knapweeds, thistles, blackberries, and umbellifers.
Pip1–3: Close-ups of the butterfly

The main image really shows just how tiny it is! The beetle is quite small (approx. 3 to 4.5 mm) and features a distinctive, irregular yellow-and-black pattern on its pronotum and wing cases that resembles ancient characters or hieroglyphs. It is frequently found along sunny forest edges, in thickets and hedgerows, and in meadows. It prefers moist, sunny habitats, often near bodies of water or river floodplains. Both the beetles and their larvae are herbivores, feeding primarily on the leaves of various willow species and sometimes on poplars or birches. As is typical for case-bearing leaf beetles, they often simply drop from the leaf when threatened to escape predators :))
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the beetle

The spider is generally inconspicuous in color—yellowish, brown, or gray—with a slender build and often darker chelicerae (fangs). They do not build typical webs for catching prey; instead, they weave tube- or sack-like resting retreats out of silk beneath leaves, bark, or stones. They are nocturnal, free-roaming hunters that locate their prey (insects and small arthropods) using their sense of touch and overpower them directly, without a web. They are frequently found on bushes, in meadows, forests, or gardens—often on the leaves of plants—and are completely harmless to humans :))
Pip1–4: Close-ups of the spider

The common thick-headed fly (*Sicus ferrugineus*) belongs to the family Conopidae. It reaches a body length of 8 to 13 mm. Characteristic features include its reddish-brown body, pale yellow face, noticeably thickened frons, and the swollen abdomen that gives the fly its name. The adult flies are diurnal and feed primarily on nectar and pollen; they are frequently found on plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) and carrot (Apiaceae) families. As endoparasitoids, the females catch bumblebees in flight and use their ovipositor to deposit an egg between the bee's abdominal segments. The larva develops inside the bumblebee and overwinters there within the pupa, while the host dies :))
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the flies

Winged carpenter ants are not a distinct species of ant; rather, they are the reproductive individuals (virgin queens and males) of the carpenter ant (*Camponotus*), which is one of the largest ant species in Central Europe. Winged queens often reach a length of 16 to 20 mm. They possess two pairs of translucent wings—used exclusively for the nuptial flight—and range in color from deep black to reddish-brown. Typically, from late spring to early summer, hundreds of winged ants leave the nest simultaneously during warm, humid weather to mate in mid-air. The males die shortly after successful mating. The fertilized virgin queen actively sheds her wings (breaking them off at a pre-determined breaking point) and searches the ground for a suitable hiding place.
Pip1–4: Close-up shots of the ant

Why do winged aphids develop?
Overcrowding and lack of space: When a colony of wingless aphids becomes too large. When the host plant dries out or no longer provides sufficient nutrients. In late summer and autumn, to seek out winter hosts or initiate sexual reproduction.
They possess two pairs of transparent wings, allowing them to drift on the wind to colonize new plants. They are often slightly darker and more slender than their wingless counterparts, making them more aerodynamic. At the new location, winged aphids usually produce wingless offspring again in order to rapidly establish new colonies.
Pip1-6: Close-ups of the aphid

The upper side of the wings is white with greyish-black wingtips. Females have two dark spots on the forewings, while males have only one. On the underside, the wings are pale yellow with a slight greenish dusting. With a wingspan of approximately 40 to 50 mm, it is significantly smaller than its relative, the Large White (*Pieris brassicae*). It can be found in gardens, meadows, and fields, as well as in parks and residential areas, from April to October, with two to three generations per year. It feeds on the nectar of a wide variety of flowers :))

Yesterday I showed the nymph of this bug; its coloration ranges from yellowish-orange and reddish-brown to a vibrant purple/violet. Characteristic features include the dark spots and stripes on the pronotum, as well as the black-and-yellow patterned margin of the abdomen! Adults reach a body length of approximately 11 to 14 mm. These bugs feed by sucking plant sap. They prefer umbellifers (such as carrots or hogweed), composites, and various crops :))
Pics 1–5: Close-ups of the bug

I believe this is the nymph in question because an adult *Carpocoris purpureipennis* (purple shield bug) was also present on the same flower; its body shape is broadly oval and slightly convex, with clearly visible wing pads—features characteristic of the late nymphal stage of shield bugs (Pentatomidae). The yellowish base color, combined with the distinct dark longitudinal stripes on the head and pronotum and the spots on the abdomen, matches the appearance of the fifth nymphal stage exactly. I uploaded the image to the AI and received this description!
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the nymph

Typical features include a slender body, striking yellow and black striped patterns on the thorax and abdomen, and—in the male—highly comb-like or fan-shaped antennae. Body length generally ranges from 12 to 20 mm, accompanied by a considerable span of long, fragile legs. Adult crane flies primarily consume water, dew drops, or occasionally nectar.

It measures approximately 25 to 30 millimeters; the forewings are grayish-brown to ochre, featuring two distinctive dark brown transverse bands. A key identifying feature is a dark brown triangular spot near the wing tip. The hindwings are often concealed when the moth is at rest but are clearly visible during flight, displaying a striking yellow-orange to brownish-yellow pattern. This gives the moth a surprisingly colorful appearance in flight. It typically produces two generations per year: the first from late April to June, and the second from July to August. Diet: The adult moths actively feed on nectar during the day, showing a preference for plants in the pea family (such as alfalfa or clover).
Pip1–4: Close-up images of the Butterfly

The body length is approximately 28 to 42 mm, and it is a bright green throughout, often with a fine brownish pattern on its back. The antennae are very long (often extending well beyond the abdomen), which clearly distinguishes it from grasshoppers. Females possess a long, slightly curved ovipositor at the end of their abdomen for laying eggs in the soil. It feeds predatorily on smaller insects such as aphids, caterpillars, and larvae. On warm summer and late summer afternoons and evenings, the males produce a loud, drawn-out chirp ("song") by rubbing their forewings together, which can be heard for many meters.
Pip1-4: Close-up photos of the grasshopper

It exhibits pronounced wasp mimicry with bright yellow crossbands on a black background. Characteristic features include the eponymous, bright yellow lateral margins of the abdomen and the yellow stripe on the thorax. Adults typically reach a body length of about 10 to 12 mm. It is primarily found in meadows, at forest edges, in gardens, and in clearings during mid- to late summer (approximately from June to September). It feeds mainly on nectar and pollen from various flowering plants and is therefore a beneficial pollinator.
Pip1-3: Close-up photographs of the hoverfly

It exhibits pronounced wasp mimicry with bright yellow crossbands on a black background. Characteristic features include the eponymous, bright yellow lateral margins of the abdomen and the yellow stripe on the thorax. Adults typically reach a body length of about 10 to 12 mm. It is primarily found in meadows, at forest edges, in gardens, and in clearings during mid- to late summer (approximately from June to September). The butterfly is also called the Large White; its upper wings are predominantly white with dark tips and spots. The underside of the wings gives it its name: the veins there are covered with greenish to greyish-green scales and have a yellow undertone! With a wingspan of about 35 to 45 mm, it is considered a medium-sized butterfly. It is extremely adaptable and can be found in damp meadows, at forest edges, in gardens, parks, and along streams. Unlike the Large White, it prefers somewhat damper and shadier habitats. The butterflies feed on nectar from a wide variety of flowers (such as dandelions, cuckoo flowers, or thistles). It usually produces two to three generations per year and flies from April to October.
Pip1-5: Close-up photos of the butterfly

Their net-like, translucent wings are striking, lying roof-like over their abdomen when at rest. They owe their nickname "golden eyes" to their often metallic-golden-shining compound eyes. Their bodies are slender and usually pale green, although some species turn slightly brownish to reddish-purple in autumn for overwintering. Lacewing larvae are nicknamed "aphid lions." A single larva can devour up to 500 aphids, as well as spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs, during its development. Unlike their predatory larvae, adult lacewings feed mainly on pollen, nectar, and honeydew. They are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal and are often attracted to light sources.

They are mostly green, but brown or reddish variations also occur. The lateral keels of the pronotum are almost straight to slightly curved. The wings are generally short and not fully developed. The insects are therefore flightless and move primarily by hopping. Males grow to about 13–16 mm in length, while females are significantly larger at 18–22 mm. The characteristic song of the males consists of short stanzas ("srr-srr-srr") repeated at intervals of a few seconds, produced by rubbing the hind legs against the forewings. They can be found in meadows, pastures, along roadsides, and in gardens, preferably in grassy areas that are not too dry.

Its appearance is variable in color (yellow, orange, red, or almost black) with 0 to 19 spots. A typical identifying feature is the black "M" or "W" on the light-colored pronotum. At about 6 to 8 mm, it is somewhat larger and more robust than the native two-spot or seven-spot ladybird. It eats enormous numbers of aphids (up to 250 per day), but in times of food scarcity, it will also eat other insects, eggs, or even larvae of native ladybird species!
Pip1-4: Close-up photos of the ladybird
