L’abbaye de Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire ou abbaye de Fleury a été fondée en 651. C' est l'un des premiers monastères en Gaule à vivre selon la règle de saint Benoît et les reliques de Saint Benoît y sont transférées. Au début du XIe siècle, l'abbaye est un des centres culturels de l'Occident et rayonne alors grâce à son importante bibliothèque et son scriptorium. Après un incendie en 1026, l'église actuelle est reconstruite et sa tour-porche est célèbre par la haute qualité des sculptures des chapiteaux.

Together with the two other marble towns, Borba and Vila Viçosa, Estremoz is internationally known for its fine to medium marble that occurs in several colours: white, cream, pink, grey or black and streaks with any combination of these colours. Especially the pink marble (Rosa Aurora and Estremoz Pink) is in high demand.
This marble has been used since Antiquity as a material for sculpture and architecture. The first exports in Roman times were probably for the construction of the Circus Maximus of Emerita Augusta, in modern-day Spain. The Portuguese navigators exported this marble to Africa, India and Brazil. The marble from this region was used in famed locations such as the Monastery of Jerónimos, the Monastery of Batalha, the Monastery of Alcobaça and the Tower of Belém. Portugal is the second largest exporter of marble in the world, surpassed only by Italy (Carrara marble). About 85% of this marble (over 370,000 tons) is produced around Estremoz.

It is believed that this castle was constructed on the site of a primitive Lusitanian Castro that was later conquered by the Romans during the 1st century B.C.E. It was later remodeled by successive invading forces, including the Alans, Visigoths and Moors, although it is unclear when the actual castle was established.
The castle of Almourol is one of the more emblematic and cenographic medieval military monuments of the Reconquista, and best representation of the influence of the Knights Templar in Portugal. When it was conquered in 1129, by forces loyal to the Portuguese nobility and placed in the trust of Gualdim Pais, the master of the Knights Templar in Portugal, who rebuilt the structure.

The Church of São Julião was originally built in the second half of the 13th century. According to tradition, it was sponsored by the fishermen of Setúbal. It is known that, at the end of the 15th century, the church was connected to the Palace of Jorge de Lencastre, Master of the Order of Santiago and Duke of Aveiro. The Duke used the Church of São Julião as his private chapel until around 1510

A singular (enigmatic) building of Romanesque civic architecture, it is an eloquent extension of the medieval prison tower that it juxtopositions. Its construction was, most likely, in the first half of the 13th century, coincident with the foundation of the cistern.
In 1501, in the published writings of the Abbot of Baçal, the author referred to the local record of Martim Anes, who spoke of the construction of the Domus during his lifetime. In this account, Martin Anes stated that it was used as a meeting place for the "good men" of the municipality. By 1503, the Domus was remodelled to partition the hall into two divisions to formalize its use as municipal hall.
Located in the Terreiro do Castelo alongside the Church of Santa Maria, the structure is based on a multi-level irregular pentagon, constructed of rounded granite blocks and held together by morter, while covered by wooden roof tiles.
The Domus is constituted by two distinct spaces: the primitive cistern (documented after 1446), in order to store spring water; and a superior space that served as a gathering place for meetings of the "good men" of the community. It was in the first years of the 16th century that the municipalization of Bragança, from documents dated 1503.

Les moines de fontenay mettaient en pratique l'idéal cistercien "ora et labora", consistant en une vie de prière et de travail. Ils vivaient en autarcie, cultivaient les terres, élevaient les animaux et mettaient à profit les richesses locales. La forêt proche leur fournissait le bois nécessire à la fabrique de tuiles, de pavement de terres cuites. Ils exploitaient également le sous riche en fer, le minerai étant réduit sur place.

Pedro Álvares Cabral c. 1467 or 1468 – c. 1520) was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the discoverer of Brazil. Cabral conducted the first substantial exploration of the northeast coast of South America and claimed it for Portugal. While details of Cabral's early life are unclear, it is known that he came from a minor noble family and received a good education. Village of Belmonte 2016.
