These shots are a little bit out of order, but I think that if I put them in this order, rather than their correct chronological order, my story will make more sense. :-) This is the Palace of Culture and Science, or "Pałac Kultury i Nauki," in Warsaw, Poland. It was built in 1952-1955, and originally dedicated to Joseph Stalin, as Soviet money financed it, although this was quickly revoked with the Destalinisation reforms in the Communist Party during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The building has long been exactly what its name indicates, having a theatre, a cinema, a science and technology museum, and many other things having to do with history, the arts, culture, science, and technology. One of the odder footnotes in its history was that it was the first ever Communist venue to host a Western rock band, the Rolling Stones, in 1967.

Marjensztat is a bit off the beaten path, and not technically in the Old Town, but I wanted to include it here because of this cool building clock that I found while wandering around. Like any proper historic city, even a reconstructed one, Warsaw has all of these cool little details around to keep your interest.

There's the Holy Cross Church on the right again. In any case, this shot came out far more antique-looking than I expected. I was, after all, shooting Tri-X in a Nikon N80, so it should come out normal, right? Well, no, apparently not. I decided to post this unedited to show you what it looked like, just because it could arguably be just as cool as a technically good shot.

There is actually tram access to the Royal Castle, as there's a road tunnel under the Royal Square with tram tracks in it, and a tram stop on the castle side.

Above the plaque commenorating the rebuilding of the old town is this very ornate clock. I don't know if it's a repro of an older one, but anyone familiar with Eastern and Central Europe knows that such clocks were very common there over the years.

This is the famous Old Town Square of Warsaw. Like the rest of the old town, it was rebuilt in 1951-1953 following its destruction in World War II, but it feels fully authentic to visit, with the right amount of weathering and wear and tear, as that WAS still 54 years ago.
