Discovered in the archives and taken on the first of many visits to The Whisky Island,
The lighthouse (also known as Rubh'an Duin or Rubha an Duin) is a picturesque, compact lighthouse on the southeast side of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula, on the island of Islay (one of Scotland's Inner Hebrides, often called the "Queen of the Hebrides" or "whisky island"). It sits near the village of Port Charlotte, overlooking the sea loch of the same name.

Built: 1869 by renowned Scottish lighthouse engineers David and Thomas Stevenson, About 13 metres (43 ft) — a relatively short, "stumpy" white cylindrical brick tower with a balcony, lantern room, black dome, and ochre/yellow trim

HFF and a good weekend ,,,,,,,, in 16.9 format therefore a large view may be good!

The Isle of Whithorn Light (also known as Isle Head Lighthouse or locally as The Cairn) is a small, historic navigation beacon located on the headland at the tip of the Isle of Whithorn, a picturesque coastal village in Dumfries and Galloway, southwestern Scotland. This is one of the most southerly points in Scotland, overlooking the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea.
The structure is a distinctive square, white-painted stone tower, roughly 4 meters (about 13 feet) tall, with a modern lantern on top. It serves as a light beacon for mariners, characterised by a flashing white light (with red sectors) every 3 seconds and a focal height of around 20 meters.

Historians suggest the original structure dates back possibly to the medieval period or before the 18th century, originally perhaps featuring a fire lit on the roof for basic navigation. HBM!

This is a ruined medieval church dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, often seen as the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine. It was a place of pilgrimage during the Middle Ages as archaeological work has shown traces of earlier buildings beneath the present ruins, indicating a long and complex ecclesiastical history. It has a cross shaped plan.
Tŵr Mawr lighthouse is Welsh for “great tower” and started life as an unlit marker it was improved with lighting in 1846. It was made redundant when the smaller nearby tower was fitted with more modern equipment in 1975

JayOh (John Owles) has posted:

Penthland Firth is the name of the treacherous strait between Caithness and the Orkney Islands. It was- and is - a very dangerous area for shipping because it has one of the most powerful tidal currents in the world. This can create tidal swell waves several metres in height. In the eastern part of the strait, currents up to 16 knots have been measured.

Areas where the current and the tidal swell are particularly pronounced have been given names such as The Merry Men of May and The Swilkie. The latter also sometimes creates a maelstrom or whirlpool. The name Swilkie has Nordic origins meaning something like “the swallower”. According to a legend, said to date back to Viking times and also known from the Younger Edda, the maelstrom is created by a sea witch rotating the quern that grinds salt for the sea – hence the word maelstrom (mael = grind; strom = current). The Swilkie originates from a point on the small island of Stroma, whose name also has Nordic origins: “Strøm Ø” (Current Island). The place names clearly speak of the dangers of the strait!

From the Viking Museum, Denmark
www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/en/professions/education/the-viking-age-geography/the-vikings-in-the-west/scotland/pentland-firth

The name, Pentland Firth, is presumed to be a corruption of the Old Norse "Petlandsfjörð", meaning "the fjord of Pictland"

Prior to the Norse occupation of Orkney the strait was known as the "Sea of Orcs" – a reference to the Pictish tribe who inhabited Orkney. Such was their marine prowess that there are also instances of this name referring to the sea lanes of the entire west coast of Scotland down to Kintyre. One version of the 9th-century Historia Brittonum states that "the Britons originally filled the whole island with their peoples from the English Channel to the Sea of Orcs.
