When I took this photo on 27 November 2010, I was looking up into the trees and had only a camera and telescopic zoom lens. I had none of the special lighting equipment and so even after digitally brightening the image, the photo remained less than desirable. Now with AI and asking it to change the back lighting to front lighting, this photo has been rehabilitated as if I had the special equipment in the first place. :)

I also had AI remove the branch in front of the owl's face.

Photo of a Coral Hairstreak butterfly (Satyrium titus nectaring on an orange butterfly weed (Asclepia tuberosa) plant -- one of its favorite nectar sources.

This is the first time since 2015 that a few orange butterfly weed plants (considered endangered) blossomed on the grounds of the Rye, NY nature center.

Die 'Cascate del Varone' sind ein mehrstufiger Wasserfall nahe der Ortschaft Tenno, etwa 3 km entfernt von Riva del Garda im Trentino.
Der in mindestens drei Abschnitte zu unterteilende Wasserfall – obere Grotte, untere Grotte und offene Stufen – ist Teil des Torrente Varone, der in seinem Oberlauf den Namen Magnone trägt. Der knapp zehn Kilometer lange Bach entspringt westlich des Tennosees und wird durch Sickerwasser des Tennosees zusätzlich gespeist. Er mündet schließlich in Riva del Garda in den Gardasee.
Die Cascate del Varone und die von ihnen gegrabene Schlucht gelten als perfektes Beispiel für die „regressive Erosion durch Wasserfälle“.

Bedingt durch die unterschiedliche Härte des Gesteins hatte die Erosion unterschiedlich starke Auswirkungen, da sie den ursprünglichen Faltungen des Gesteins folgte. Anfangs wirkten die Erosionskräfte eher schwach, verstärkten sich aber deutlich, nachdem sich ein erstes Bachbett gebildet hatte. Im harten Jurakalk von Varone zeigt sich die Erosion in schmalen, aber tiefen Einschnitten. Das Wasser, das viel Sand mit sich trägt, bildet beim Fallen Strudel, die sich immer tiefer in die entstehende Schlucht „hineinfräsen“.

Dieser Vorgang dauert immer noch an, und das Wasser erodiert das Gestein durchschnittlich zwei Millimeter pro Jahr. Dadurch zieht sich der obere Rand der Stufe immer weiter in den Berg zurück und vergrößert dadurch die Fallhöhe. Gleichzeitig arbeiten sich die Wasserstrudel immer tiefer in den Berg hinein.

Heute hat die Schlucht vom unteren Eingang aus eine Länge von 55 Metern. Ganz oben, wo sich der höchste Austritt befindet, hat sie sich 73 Meter in den Fels gegraben. Die gesamte Fallhöhe der Kaskaden liegt bei etwa 100 Metern. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascate_del_Varone

Here in Oregon, we have had a very warm summer and lots of sun, but the last few days we got to enjoy pleasant overcast skies and a bit of rain. So as the clouds have started to fade today, I chose to look up for our event.
It was my daughter who taught me to do so, starting with the moon. Others would not be noticing, and she would be gazing upward in fascination.
So this is in homage to her - returning from an outing, I remembered to look up.

This cicada has a strange shape and is usually discovered between August and October! It has 2 thorns on its pronotum and a reddish-brown extension that runs backwards, and the last leg segments are also reddish-brown!

Cette cigale a une forme étrange et se découvre généralement d'août à octobre ! Elle a 2 épines sur le pronotum et un appendice arrière brun rougeâtre, et les dernières pattes sont également brun rougeâtre !

I wasn't able to go out on Saturday 19 August (evening garden party with guests and lots of preparations to do). So I took this photo in the afternoon from one end of our house. This used to be the woodshed, now it's an office.

MA CONTRIBUTION DE LA JOURNEE MONDIALE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE. Je n'ai pas pu sortir ce samedi 19 août (le soir fête au jardin avec des invités, donc plein de préparations à faire). Du coup j'ai pris cette photo en debut d'après-midi d'un bout de notre maison. Avant ici il y avait le bucher, aujourd'hui c'est un bureau.

MEIN BEITRAG ZUM WELTFOTOTAG. Ich konnte an diesem Samstag 19. August nicht von zuhause weg (abends Gartenparty mit Gästen, daher viele Vorbereitungen zu treffen). Deshalb habe ich nachmittags dieses Foto von einem Ende unseres Hauses gemacht. Früher war hier der Holzschuppen, heute ist es ein Büro.
