Salto Floriano is one of the most spectacular falls on the Brazilian side of Iguazú (the falls in the background are in Argentina).
The first note was taken from the topmost viewpoint, the second from the lower viewpoint.

Gentoo penguins are the 3rd largest species of penguin. They breed on the Antarctic peninsula and on Subantarctic islands, using snow free areas to build their nest of stones. Often the nests lie quite high up and the birds have to struggle uphill. Downwards they like to toboggan on their bellies;-)

These photos are from Peterman Island where all 3 species of pygoscelis can be watched (apart from gentoo also Adelie/ Pygoscelis adeliae and chinstrap/Pygoscelis antarcticus). Visitors should keep their distance and never block the birds' way to the sea.

An outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Svinafellsjökull comes down from Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnúkur (2110m) which sits on the caldera rim of Öræfajökull volcano.
As the glacier retreats the mountainsides have become unstable. There have been major landslides and the popular excursions on the glacier have become dangerous. In 2007 two German mountaineers disapperared without trace.

Salar de Surire is ringed by volcanoes and lies at 4250m in the far north of Chile, just across the border from Bolivia. It is home (among others) to all 3 Chilean species of flamingo, to vicuña, viscacha, ñandú (suri) and puma. The western part of the salar is used for Lithium mining.

Once a farm at the mouth of Seyðisfjörður, Skálanes is now run as a private Nature and Heritage Centre. There is a road along the fjord but the last 2,5 km to Skálanes are only passable for 4x4 (several river crossings) or via a footpath that has bridges. Just before the house the track crosses a breeding area of arctic terns- we got attacked quite aggressively;-)

Der Rio Iguazú fällt in 2 Stufen über Basaltschichten und bildet dabei 20 große und 255 kleinere Wasserfälle, die zwischen 64 und 82m hoch sind. Der Hauptwasserfall stürzt in die 150m breite Garganta del Diablo (Teufelsschlucht).
Mitten durch den Fluss verläuft die Grenze zwischen Brasilien/Provinz Paraná (links im Bild) und Argentinien/ Provinz Misiones /rechts im Bild). Beide Seiten sind durch Nationalparks geschützt und UNESCO Welterbe. Argentinien hat den größeren Teil der Fälle, von Brasilien aus hat man den besten Überblick (vorzugsweise im Nachmittagslicht).

Hverfjall is a tuff ring near Lake Mývatn that was created ca. 2500 years ago in a massive phreatomagmatic eruption (hot magma reacting with groundwater). It is part of the Krafla volcanic system.

On the left in the PiP and just SE of Hverfjall is another tuff ring, 6600 years old Lúdent.. The big mountain in the background is Búrfjell, a 959m high tuya (table mountain created by volcanic eruptions under a glacier)

Direkt östlich des Anden-Hauptkamms und nahe der Grenze zu Chile liegt die bolivianische Salvador-Dalí-Wüste auf ca. 4500m Höhe. Die bizarren Felsformationen, die durch Wind-Erosion entstanden sind, bestehen aus Ignimbrit, wie auch die ganze Landschaft vulkanisch geprägt ist. DIe Dalí-Wüste ist Teil des Eduardo-Avaroa-Nationalparks.
