Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, is located about 100 km south of the Peloponnese. Crete was the center of Europe's first advanced civilization, the Minoans, from 3000 to 1400 BC. The Minoan civilization was overrun by the Mycenaean civilization from mainland Greece. Crete was later ruled by Rome, then successively by the Byzantine Empire, Andalusian Arabs, the Byzantine Empire again, the Venetian Republic, and the Ottoman Empire. In 1898 Crete, whose people had for some time wanted to join the Greek state, achieved independence from the Ottomans, formally becoming the Cretan State. Crete became part of Greece in December 1913.

Heraklion is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete. With a municipal population of about 180.000 it is the fourth largest city in Greece. The greater area of Heraklion has been continuously inhabited since at least 7000 BCE, making it one of the oldest inhabited regions in Europe. As a major center of the Minoan civilization it often considered Europe's oldest city.

"Hagios Markos" is a former Roman Catholic basilica, situated in the Eleftheriou Venizelou Square. It was built in 1239, during the Venetian rule of the island, following the conquest after the Fourth Crusade.

After the Ottoman conquest of Crete in 1669, it was converted into a mosque. The building was used as a mosque until 1915.

After the Greco-Turkish population exchange in 1924 the former mosque came to the municipality of Heraklion and was used at first as a cinema. In the early 1950s the municipal council suggested that the church be demolished and a municipal theatre or a post office be built in its place, a plan which was abandoned as the necessary funds could not be collected. In 1954 the archaeological council decided on the preservation of the church and in 1956 restoration works of the basilica began.

Ever since the completion of the restoration works in 1960, the former church has been used as a municipal art gallery.

...in der Paul-Roosenstraße 33 waren die Beatles bei ihrem ersten Engagement untergebracht. Hinter der Leinwand in zwei fensterlosen Abstellräumen hausten die jungen und unerfahrenen Liverpooler Musiker mehr als primitiv.
Bruno Koschmider, eine Hamburger Kiezgröße der damaligen Zeit, wollte die neue Musikrichtung RocknRoll in Hamburg bekannter machen und seinen Nachtclub INDRA dadurch aufwerten.
Als die noch unbekannte Gruppe um John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe und dem Schlagzeuger Pete Best im August 1960 nach Hamburg kamen, dachten sie an Auftritte im angesagten Club Kaiserkeller.
Koschmieder verlangte aber, dass sie im INDRA spielen sollten, jeweils für 30 min zwischen halbstündlichen Striptease Aufführungen. Sie traten 48 Mal im "Indra" auf, das damals vor allem von Prostituierten und ihren Kunden frequentiert wurde, bevor der Club wegen Lärmbeschwerden der Nachbarn geschlossen werden musste.

St. Katharinen, originally the church of brewers and shipbuilders, was founded in 1256. It was rebuilt in brick gothic style in the mid 15th century and fitted with a baroque top to its spire in 1657. The organ built by Hans Stellwagen in 1670 was played by Bach among others.
In 1943 the church was destroyed in Allied bomb raids (Operation Gomorrha), only the foundation walls and the base of the tower were left. After the war it was rebuilt to original plans and fitted with modern windows and artwork.
Some of the organ pipes luckily had survived, so the organ and its casing were restored using photographs and original plans.
In 1962 the North Sea flood (over 300 dead in Hamburg) hit the church hard, flood marks can still be seen on the walls.

Geht man in der Wohlwillstraße 22 (St. Pauli) durch die Einfahrt, kommt man in die Jäger-Passage. Rechts steht ein Wohnblock in Rotklinker mit einer Tür, vor der 1961 ein Foto von John Lennon entstand - für eine Plattenhülle "John Lennon - Rock'n'Roll" (siehe PiP 2).
Dies war in der Zeit, als die 4 (5) Liverpooler im Indra, im Kaiserkeller und 1961 im Top Ten Club auftraten. Später folgte das legendäre Engagement der Beatles im Star Club.
Der Fotograf damals war der Hamburger Jürgen Vollmer, der die erst noch unbekannte Band fotografisch begleitete. John Lennon sagte über ihn: "Er war der erste Fotograf, der den Geist der Beatles einfing. Es gab keinen, dessen Bilder den Betrachter so berührten wie seine". Und Paul McCartney meinte, Vollmers Stilgefühl und sein Talent als Fotograf wären für die Karriere der Beatles von größter Bedeutung gewesen.
Im Juni bei meiner Suche nach der "richtigen" Tür waren ein paar Nachbarn behilflich, die dort im Hof auf Gartenstühlen zusammen saßen. Eine Frau meinte, sie müsse mich unbedingt vor dieser Tür fotografieren - naja, eine John Lennon Kopie ist es nicht geworden :-)
