Not my usual stye of tabletop photograph, but I wanted to try something a little different.

The "brick wall" is actually a piece of wall paper, which I bought as a leftover from a charity shop. The vase also came from a charity shop and the lighting was from an LED panel.

I can recommend the book if you are interested in spiders :-))

I spotted this poster whilst browsing in a charity store bookshop. It wasn't for sale, but I was allowed to take this photo.

I wonder how many of today's children have ever read a real book, or had one read to them?

"Behind the Flying Saucers. Frank Scully. The book everyone is talking about. Popular Library. Earle Bergey."

Earle K. Bergey's wonderfully frightening cover illustration of saucers in the sky and panic in the streets certainly helped to make this "the book everyone is talking about" when it appeared in 1950. But author Frank Scully's account of flying saucer crashes and dead extraterrestrials in Arizona and New Mexico was probably enough to get people talking even without the cover.

Scully wasn't the only one writing about such scary topics in 1950. Author Donald Keyhoe also argued that The Flying Saucers Are Real:

The Flying Saucers Are Real, written by Donald Keyhoe, first appeared in 1950. Frank Tinsley's dramatic cover illustration helped to convey the startling news that flying saucers (or UFOs aka unidentified flying objects) are actually extraterrestrial spacecraft.

That's what we're told on the back cover (see below) of The Smuggled Atom Bomb, a 1951 novel by Philip Wylie. The front cover (above) warns us about "an atomic plot against America" and poses the question, "Is the fate of America ticking away?"

Marie Schubert illustrated the Halloween-themed cover of Honey Bunch: Her First Costume Party, which was published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1943. The Stratemeyer Syndicate produced a number of Honey Bunch books along with other popular children's series, which included Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and the Bobbsey Twins.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of "what’s that on his shoe?" or other unexpected details.

In this snapshot, a woman sits for a souvenir photo in front of the giant book that's part of the High Water Mark of the Rebellion Monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania.

When I purchased this photo, I noticed that there's a man on the right who's oddly standing behind the woman and near the back of the monument. I didn't think anything of it until I got home and scanned the photo. When I took a look at an enlarged version (mouse over the image above to see it), I made the unexpected discovery that the fellow was irreverently thumbing his nose as the photographer snapped the picture. Photobombing, of course, is nothing new!

An interesting item of Victoriana despite its discoloration, this trade card served as an advertisement for John F. Clarke's business and provided a New Year greeting for his customers.

In the curious illustration on the card, Father Time has dropped his scythe and hourglass. He's wearing sandals on his feet as he trudges away through the snow, and he's taking refuge behind a huge open book. Was he planning to "close the books" on the old year with the oversized ledger?

Father Time is using the enormous tome to deflect the snowballs that an impetuous young schoolboy (apparently an older-than-usual representation of Baby New Year) is hurling at him. The boy's snowball barrage is so relentless that Father Time has given up—he's departing the scene and yielding the New Year to the new kid on the block.
