This is a museum-farm outside of Forest City, Iowa. I like their roadside sign. You can see the names of the original residents, primarily from Scandinavia (I'm guessing Norwegian.)

This is the view we had from Highway 26 as we approached Guernsey, Wyoming. We spotted the railroad yards on our left, and managed to get some photos of the yard activities. (See PIP)

A pretty famous stretch of road. There were many folks pulled over to the side to take photos. Some of the more adventuresome were lying on their backs on the center line of the highway, trying to get dramatic perspective.

Anyway, I had to get some pictures as I drove this stretch of road, too.

And Colorado State Route 141. Looking southeasterly. The story behind the unpromising name is that a surveying party in the late 1800s was expecting to find water in the creek, and it was dry due to it being late summer. The insets show some views more to the left. The location is approximate. Disappointment Valley also contains a mustang refuge.

Road to Wolf Creek trailhead at the edge of the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. Sierra Nevada, Alpine County, California. Looking west. The prominent conical peak on the skyline in the middle of the pic has an elevation of 9182 ft/2799 m but is unnamed, according to the USGS 7.5' topo.

Washoe County Rd 34 entering Oregon from Nevada, where the route becomes Lake Co. 3-15 (Coleman Valley Rd.) Pretty arbitrary, and in a very remote part of both states!
And that's where the history comes in. The state line here is the 42nd parallel, as well as could be established by 19th century technology. This parallel now defines the northern boundary of California, Nevada, and western Utah and the southern boundary of Oregon and Idaho, and _that's_ because the 42nd parallel was the northern limit, by treaty, of the Spanish land claims, which were later inherited by Mexico, and then by the U.S. after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. (All this, it goes without saying, without any consideration of, or input from, the local Native American tribes.)
So, once both sides of this line were under US sovereignty, wouldn't it have made more sense to make the new state lines less arbitrary? John Wesley Powell, one of the "founding fathers" of the US Geological Survey, thought so, and advocated drawing state lines along watershed boundaries. He is quoted as saying something like, "You can make work for surveyors, or for lawyers." Well, this is America! Of course Congress made work for lawyers-- ;)

Out the east side of Dixie Valley, Nevada, crossing the Clan Alpine Range. The pass is at the obvious low point to the center-right. The road was in good shape thru here, but had some serious washouts higher up--the high clearance and 4wd was useful! I also saw no other vehicles--my kinda road! It ultimately joins US 50 in the next valley.
