Der Saturday Market, einer der bekannten Märkte in Chiang Mai auf der Wua Lai Road, der -wie der Name vermuten lässt- jedem Samstag von etwa 16 Uhr bis in die Abendstunden stattfindet.

Für Touristen vielleicht etwas ungewohnt:
Auch auf dem Markt und wie (theoretisch) überall in Thailand in Parks, Bahnhöfen und öffentlichen Plätzen stehen um 18 Uhr alle Besucher still, es ertönt die 'Phleng Chat Thai', das Lied der thailändischen Nation (Nationalhymne).

The music, costume, and stylised slowness are less survivals of a single dynasty than contemporary inventions that compress centuries of practice into a few minutes on stage, making the “Way of Tea” intelligible to tourists, students, and urban Chinese who seldom drink tea this way at home.

In doing so, this performative branch has helped propel gongfu cha into the realm of “intangible cultural heritage” and onto the global stage, turning what began as a regional oolong‑brewing method into a widely recognised emblem of Chinese elegance, often contrasted with the more codified, Zen‑inflected Japanese tea ceremony.

Im Elephant Rescue Park in der Nähe von Chiang Mai.
In Elephant Rescue Park können sich die Elefanten mehr oder weniger frei bewegen, auf grosse Shows* wird verzichtet. Dafür können Besucher mit den Elefanten spazieren, ein paar Kleinigkeiten zum Fressen zustecken und mit ihnen baden gehen, alles unter Aufsicht von Mahouts (Elefantenbetreuer), die ihre Elefanten genau kennt**.

Parks werben mit Schlagwörtern wie 'Ethical Elephant Sanctuary' und ähnlichem, da darf man einerseits oft nicht 'hinter die Kulissen' schauen und andererseits ist der Ausdruck 'ethisch/ethical' unter Umständen ein weiter Begriff ... vergl. dazu auch den Hinweis 'Aber' weiter unten ...

*Vor allem in der Nähe von Touristenzentren wie Chiang Mai oder Phuket werden (leider noch immer) Elefanten-Shows wie Baumstämme schleppen, Fussballspielen mit den Tieren, Malen etc. und als Höhepunkt Elefantenreiten angeboten.
Die Tiere in solchen Parks leben in der Regel in Ketten und unter schlechten Bedingungen, werden mit Elefantenhaken***, Eisenstangen und Schlägen zu irgendwas gezwungen was sie nicht wollen usw. (vor ein paar Jahren selber in Thailand und auch Nepal gesehen) – da ist schon einiges besser geworden ...

Aber:
Wir hatten bereits im Voraus von zu Hause aus den Ausflug zum 'Elephant Nature Park' gebucht: In den Unterlagen der Agentur (mit Sitz in Berlin und guten Bewertungen auf verschiedenen Portalen, keine xy-Agentur) wurde ein Besuch im 'Elephant Nature Park' angeboten ... leider war's dann ein Ausflug in den 'Elephant Rescue Park', der zwar auch interessant, aber eben nicht das Elefantenrettungs- und Rehabilitationszentrum von 'Saengduean Chailert' war, der mich sehr interessiert hätte und einer der wenigen Parks ist, in dem eine ethische Haltung von Elefanten garantiert und durch den Staat und diversen Tierschutzorganisationen kontrolliert wird. Im besuchten Park leben die Elefanten auch unter besseren Bedingungen als früher, aber beim Füttern der Tiere durch und dem Baden mit Touristen muss einfach ein grosses Fragezeichen gemacht werden. Dies entspricht nicht dem natürlichen Umgang den die Elefanten sonst pflegen.

Bhutan is often overlooked — its carefully managed tourism and mandatory daily fees push many travelers toward the “free” alternatives across the Himalayas. But those who skip it miss something rare. This journey was one of those quiet rewards.

We spent six days trekking across high terrain, crossing three passes above 4,000 meters, moving through landscapes that feel both vast and deeply personal. Nights were spent under the shadow of Jomolhari (7,326 m), Bhutan’s second-highest peak, rising with a presence that is both imposing and serene.

What stayed with us just as much as the mountains was the absence of crowds. Over those days, we encountered almost no tourists—just a few solitary trekkers here and there—leaving long stretches of silence and a rare sense of solitude.

There is a certain stillness in Bhutan—not just in its mountains, but in its approach to the world. This trek was not only about altitude or distance, but about stepping, briefly, into that different rhythm.

Fon Lep (dt.: Fingernageltanz), ein nordthailändischer Tanzstil, bei dem die Tänzerinnen etwa 15 cm lange Fingernägel aus Messing tragen.
Die langen Nägel betonen die Fingerbewegungen, dazu tragen die Tänzerinnen ihr Haar zu einem sog. Chignon hochgesteckt und ein Diadem aus Jasminblüten.
Es ist ein langsamer, sehr synchroner Tanz, der oft in Gruppen aufgeführt wird.

In Urumqi, Xinjiang - China, 4 young Uighur food stall attendants are motionless at the tandoor, engrossed in their phones.
Phones have replaced cash in China and everything is technologically advanced.
Passport numbers or identity card numbers do all the work of tickets. If you catch a train( tickets are pre-booked) or enter a ticketed tourist spot, your entry is by scanning your passport or identity document.
It was -17°outside, so I momentarily envied them draped around the hot tandoori oven!

Different perspective from my previous post—this time focusing on a single karst formation's sculptural presence. Shot on expired stock, which adds those characteristic color shifts and grain that somehow fit these ancient limestone pillars.
