Two class 36-000 diesels work a train away from the docks in Cape Town, South Africa. The South African Railways placed 124 Class 36-000 General Electric type SG10B diesel-electric locomotives in service between June 1975 and 1981.

An image from 42 years ago to the day on our road trip around South Africa.

Driving up on the N1 to the Du Toitskloof Pass (820 metres, 2,690 ft) in the Hawequas Mountains east of Capetown heading north eventually to Kimberley.

This road is now the regional route R101 since the opening of the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 in 1988.

Unique Class 26 3450 was withdrawn in 2004 and it took a lot of effort to restore it to service in 2018. Whilst it has since hauled a number of passenger services it does not normally get a chance to haul freight. The FarRail tour in 2019 saw Derick du Toit, owner of the Ceres Rail Company, reach agreement for the locomotive to haul a train consisting mainly of wagons loaded with cement plus several vans giving a total weight of around 690 tons. It is seen here a reaching the 1212ft summit at Mowers, 14 miles east of Worcester on the former New Cape Central Railway on a run from Ashton.

Als Skelettküste wird der nördliche Teil der Meeresküste Namibias und deren Hinterland bezeichnet Die Skelettküste ist Teil der Namib. Nebel, heftige Brandung und unberechenbare starke Strömungen – durch den an der Küste nordwärts fließenden Benguelastrom – machen die Küste von jeher und bis heute für die Seefahrt gefährlich. Entlang der Küste liegen hunderte von Schiffswracks in Ufernähe und am Strand davon Zeugnis ab. Die Schiffbrüchigen, die sich noch von den an der Küste zerschellten oder gestrandeten Wracks hatten retten können, hatten in der unbesiedelten, extrem trockenen Küstenwüste keine Überlebenschance und verdursteten. Der Name bezieht sich daher sowohl auf die Schiffs-„Skelette“, die echten Skelette der Gestrandeten, aber auch auf die zahlreichen Gerippe von an Land gespülten Walen.

Class 19B No.1412 leads a train north from Ceres on the branch to Prince Alfred Hamlet. This section of the line is across a plateau and is a great contrast to the steep climb up the gorge from Wolseley to Ceres.
