Could it be the gardeners?
I'll get it Edna. It's not the gardeners.
Then who is it?
Actually, it's the oil company guys. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Offer? What kind of offer?
They want to drill in our back yard.
Drill? You mean, for oil?
Yes, dear. They promised to be very careful. They'll even try not to destroy the Japanese temple. Too much.
Stanley! You turned our garden into an oil field? That's. . . horrible!
But Edna, our mineral rights are worth a fortune! And they'll only be drilling for 9 or 10 years. You'll hardly notice!
Well, if you think it's for the best, Stanley.
Trust me, Edna. It is.
Can I still take my morning dip in the pond?
Of course! I suggest you wear a hazmat suit, though. That oil scum can be tricky to wash off.

We were staying with our friends Manna and Yuveka. It had been raining all day, and when the rain eased a little we went out to see the town. Down by the banks of the Brahmaputra – a huge, majestic and muddy river – I took a few shots of the boatmen. I don’t know their stories, unfortunately; I can only guess that these are small transport or fishing canoes. If anyone knows more about life on the river here, I would be very glad to hear their experiences.

From the town, you see its forested slopes and rocky crown rising above red roofs and church spires, with the Orava basin stretching behind. The view is especially dramatic at sunrise, when the mountain glows golden above the misty valley, a favourite shot for photographers and a symbol of Orava’s wild beauty.

</media:text>

The nation's atmosphere was filled with excitement and hope as Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD) campaigned to enter parliament, marking a pivotal step away from military rule. While only a small fraction of seats were at stake, the relatively open election energized civil society and drew global attention, encouraging some international sanctions to be eased. Yet, despite this progress, the military maintained significant parliamentary power, and genuine democratic reforms remained incomplete. This day reflected both the aspirations and the ongoing challenges of Myanmar's path to democracy.

Here, in the honey-coloured tuff of central Turkey, locals have been carving out their own “apartments” for centuries-except instead of bricks and mortar, they used a handy mountain and a bit of determination. The result? Troglodyte towers like the one in your photo: a sort of prehistoric block of flats, minus the dodgy lift and with considerably better insulation.

Each “floor” is a room or two, chiselled straight into the rock, often connected by tunnels and the odd precarious staircase. The windows and doors, neatly squared off, give the whole thing a slightly whimsical, dollhouse look-if your dolls were Byzantine monks or pigeon fanciers. Speaking of pigeons, many of these upper chambers doubled as dovecotes, their little holes painted to attract birds, whose droppings were the original miracle-grow for the region’s vineyards.

Living here meant cool summers, warm winters, and a workout every time you fancied a cup of tea from the neighbours upstairs. In short: Cappadocia, where the real estate market has always been a bit… rocky.

Known as the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, or National Assembly Building, this landmark encapsulates Bangladesh's national identity and democratic values. Originally conceived by the Pakistani government in 1959 and designed by the renowned American architect Louis Kahn in 1962, its construction was interrupted by Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence. Once completed in 1982, the building transcended its initial purpose as a monument, becoming a beacon of democracy.

This architectural gem integrates modernist vision with Bengali vernacular, distinguishing it from other modernist structures. More than a government complex, it poetically conveys the nation's resilience, its design thoughtfully attuned to local contexts and culture. The building's completion marked a pivotal moment, emblematising Bangladesh's transition from Pakistani rule to self-governance.
