Taken from our balloon high above Bagan. The sun is rising over the 12th century Dhammayazika temple casting long shadows.

Seen from above like this it gives a very good idea of the amazing number of pagodas scattered around the Bagan plain.

Zig-zagging

Kerr Stuart 0-4-2 2383 of 1914 climbs a zig-zag above Wallah Gorge on the Burmah Mines Railway. The hopper wagons are for carrying ore from the mines at at the top of the line at Bawdwin. Sanding the rails is all manual.

Zinc smelting

The new smelter at Namtu was constructed after the Second World War during which the old smelter was destroyed. It processed lead, silver, zinc and copper from the Bawdwin mines but has been out of use for some time. These pots were used for smelting zinc. It was suggested that the smelter would reopen in 2012 but I have not heard anything of this since my visit.

General Aung San was instrumental in Burma/Myanmar's struggle for independence from British rule but he was assassinated just six months before his goal was realized. He is considered the founder of modern-day Myanmar.

The Bogyoke Aung San Museum was the residence of Aung San and his family just before his assassination in July 1947. His better-known daughter Aung San Suu Kyi grew up here as a child.

This is part of a beautiful circular wooden fence around a shady verandah overlooking the garden.

The sanders are hard at work as a train of ore hoppers climbs the valley to Tiger Camp on the Burma Mines Railway. The locomotive is a rare surviving product of Stoke-on-Trent builders Kerr Stuart(Works No 2383/1914).

Die U-Bein-Brücke ist ein Fußgängerübergang, der den Taungthaman-See in der Nähe von Amarapura in Myanmar quert. Die 1,2 Kilometer lange Brücke wurde um 1850 erbaut und gilt als älteste und längste Teakholz-Brücke der Welt. Der Beginn des Baus fällt in die Zeit, als die Hauptstadt des Königreichs Ava nach Amarapura verlegt wurde. Zum Bau der Brücke wurde Holz aus dem ehemaligen Königspalast in Inwa verwendet. Über 1.086 Pfähle wurden in den Seegrund gerammt; einige wurden inzwischen durch Betonpfeiler ersetzt [Quelle: Wikipedia]. Immer wieder kommt es zu Hochwasser, bei dem Teile der Brücke weggerissen werden.

Auf der vier bis fünf Meter hohen U-Bein Brücke herrscht ein reges Treiben. Unaufhörlich strömen Menschen über die Brücke: Mönche in orangefarbenen Roben, Fahrradfahrer – auch wenn das Befahren der Brücke mit dem Fahrrad verboten ist, Frauen mit Kopflasten und andere Einheimische sowie Touristen.

Viele Menschen kommen zur Brücke, um den Sonnenuntergang am Taungthaman-See zu erleben. Dabei verändert sich das Licht permanent, wie auch die auf der Brücke befindlichen Menschen ständig wechseln.

Marmion Shaft

Marmion Shaft at the Bawdwin lead/zinc mine in north-east Myanmar. It was sunk in 1914 down to the sixth (adit) level at c700ft and was subsequently deepened to serve 14 levels in total to a depth of 1700ft. The winding house contains two electric winders manufactured at the Siemens Works of English Electric at Stafford in the UK in 1925. The ore is trammed out of the mine via a two mile adit known as "Tiger Tunnel".
