Background is from a painting by Franz Kline. I associated from "Kline" to "Kleine" and ended up listening to Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" ("A Little Night Music") over and over in a loop while I was making this collage. So it's a celebration of both Franz Kline and Mozart.

Background, as is obvious, is the spines of vinyl records. All art is from record covers (plus one record), at least some of which I'm sure you'll recognize. Artists represented: Laurie Anderson, Banksy, George Baselitz, Gregory Crewdson, Dearraindrop, Ida Ekblad, Futura 2000, Kim Gordon, Keith Haring, Raymond Pettiron, and of course, Andy Warhol.

Background by Jean Arp. Where would Dada have been without the Arp brothers? Not as brilliant, that's for sure.

Golden-yellow strips by Josef Albers. Albers was a brilliant teacher on the subject of color. And he practiced what he preached: just check out the beauty of the combinations of colors in those yellow strips.

Now you'd think, "OK, a class on color: that would require paint." Wrong. Albers passed out to the class selected packs of solid colored paper, then challenged them to combine them in different ways to see how they interacted with each other. Since we can't take his course, we have the next best thing: his book. Highly recommended!

To make this collage, I started with a blue background for which, I'm embarrassed to admit, I do not know the artist. If you recognize it, please take me out of my misery and let me know whose it is!

Then I doodled on it with long strips of paper and acrylic paint. Then I added five pieces from a Joseph Cornell collage, creatively titled "Untitled." And the book I found it in didn't even have the sense to include a date!

If you are an artist of any stripe--photography, paint, collage, whatever--please... take this piece of advice: TITLE all of your artworks. When people quote you or sample you or otherwise pay homage to your work, how will they give you credit, unless you give them a title? It doesn't have to be fancy. It can be "Sunset, April 30, 2018." But please, give it a title.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to see my first collage to Joseph Cornell, which was more creative, because it didn't include anyone else's work, not even Cornell's, here it is.

I admit it: I'm a sucker for conceptual art—for art that starts out in the artist's head, followed by figuring out a way to represent that mental concept in a physical form of some kind.

But the trouble with conceptual art is, it usually requires an explanation. Which means the viewer has to sit there or stand there and read the explanation--as you are having to read this explanation. (If you've made it this far, I thank you.)

So it is with Felix Gonzales-Torres's "Untitled (Perfect Lovers)." How do two clocks, which appear to be on very close to the same time, represent the concept of "perfect lovers"?

I really like this artwork, so I made an homage to it by mounting it on a rather "pop" background. Then I got around the problem of its being a conceptual piece, by appending an explanation. It's not the only possible explanation. But it should get you started on thinking about this artwork. Enjoy!

Mr. Bones was excited to attend church bingo night with the theme of "Myths & Legends." He got started on his card, but then a call came in on his bone phone, and he had to step out to take the call. Unfortunately, he bingoed more than once while he was gone, but he couldn't collect the prizes because he wasn't there to cry out "Bingo!"

The imagery in each square derives from a specific myth or legend. In Column 1 Row 5, for example, is the story of Cupid and Venus. In Column 4 Row 4 is that of Saturn eating his children. The artists include William Blake, Hieronymus Bosch, Sandro Botticelli, Agnolo Bronzini, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Francisco de Goya, Gustave Doré, Caspar David Friedrich, Tonie Roos, Salomen Trismosin and Ferdinand von Wright. Mr. Bones is a Zapotec interpretation of the Aztec God of Death, 1300 C.E.

I hope the concept of church bingo night is not too obscure for our friends across the pond. =smile=

Paul Klee was a prolific artist (and teacher of art) who worked in quite a few different styles. When I set about making a collage in honor of Klee, I was overwhelmed by all the many directions I might go. Finally, I decided to limit myself to picking up a few motifs from different paintings. (Yes, the big red arrow is a Paul Klee motif.)

Wassily Kandinsky played a special role in my art education. The parents of a friend of mine had a Kandinsky print in their living room. I was ten years old, and I'd never seen an abstract before. I was blown away.

I've always thought it's a good exercise for an artist to copy a painting they admire. I'll leave it to you to figure out (if you're interested) which Kandinsky inspired me to make this mixed-media piece: paper, glue, acrylic paint, and markers. Kandinsky's eye for composition is a heck of a lot better than mine, so please view this as an homage, not an attempt at an exact copy.
