Calvi - La Citadelle

The island of Corsica is one of the 18 regions of France. It was colonized the Carthaginians, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Romans. After the Roman empire collapsed, Corsica got invaded by the Vandals and the Ostrogoths. For a short while the island belonged to the Byzantine Empire, then the Franks granted the island to the Pope, in the early 11th century Pisa and Genoa together freed the island from the threat of Arab invasion. The island came under the influence of the Republic of Pisa, later it belonged to Genua for centuries. In 1755 after a long fight for independence from Genoa the independent Corsican Republic was proclaimed, but in 1769, when the island was conquered by France. As the areas near the coast over centuries have been threatened by attacks and raids of pirates many old hamlets and dwellings are wide inland, high in the mountains. So most of the old churches are in the mountains and some of them are hard to find.
After many Saracen raids Corsica was awarded by the Pope to Pisa within the 11th century. Disputes between Pisa and the Republic of Genoa over the possession of the island followed. After the people of Calvi had asked Genoa for support against the local nobility in 1278, who extended and fortified the citadel and granted the Calvesern priviliges. Even during the independence battles Calvi was loyal to Genoa what explains the motto "Civitas Calvi semper fidelis".

During the war with Revolutionary France, British forces under Admiral Nelson captured the city in a siege. It was during the bombardment of Calvi in 1793 that Nelson sustained the injury that cost him his eye.

Calvi is one of many cities claiming to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. It is claimed that he was born inside this citadel and not in Italy, Spain or Portugal,

During the time of the short living Corsican Republic the small fishing village was enlarged and became a trading port with city fortifications on order of Pascal Paoli in 1759. So the Republic had a Corsican port opposite the then Genoese Calvi. At that time the town was still named "Isola Rossa", as the official language upto 1848 was Italian.

The Café des Platanes is a perfect place for a morning coffee.

The island came, just like neighbouring Sardinia, under the influence of the Republic of Pisa, later it belonged to Genua for centuries. In 1729 the Corsican fight for independence from Genoa began. After 26 years of struggle the independent Corsican Republic was proclaimed in 1755, but in 1769, when the island was conquered by France.

Sartène, seen in the mist from the local cemetry, was built it on a rocky promontory by the Genoese to protect the inhabitants from invading pirates. Mid of the 16th century ramparts were erected, but despite the "Victory of Lepanto" (1571), barbarian raids continued. So a network of coastal towers responsible for alerting people got planned. The worst attack was undertaken in 1583 by pirates from Algiers after which 400 people were taken into slavery. These attacks continued till the 18th century. Corsica is historically known for "vendettas". One of these blood feuds lasted over decades in and around Sartène between two large families in the first half of the 19th century.

Den Bewohnern von Bastelica auf Korsika waren wahrscheinlich die Steinbänke zu kalt am Hintern. Deshalb könnten die neuen Bänke an der Statue von Sampiero Corso aufgestellt worden sein. Sampiero war ein korsischer Adliger, der im 16. Jahrhundert zwei Aufstände gegen die Genuesen initiierte. Später starb er durch die Blutrache seines Schwagers. Shakespeare inspirierte seine Geschichte zu dem Drama Othello.

So most of the old churches are in the mountains and some of them are hard to find.

The Baroque church of "Saint-Jean" and the chapel of the "Pénitents de la Sainte-Croix" are very easy to find in the center of Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda. Thex date back to the 16th century. The church is huge for a village of a population of less than 400 - and the brotherhood of the penitents, that existed since 1592 abd within the 19th century still had 333 "confrères"got dissolved more than a century ago.

The whole complex is under restoration.
